Crusaders Fall to Schreiner in Season Finale

April 28, 2024

PLANO, Texas - The University of Dallas softball team lost their final game of the regular season to Schreiner University on Sunday.  The Crusaders already clinched the series with a sweep of yesterday's doubleheader.

Dallas 3, Schreiner 15 (7 Innings)

WP: Nolan Sauceda (1-3)

LP: Seth Medley (0-2)

The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the first inning, starting a two-out rally after an error by the shortstop kept the inning alive.  The first run scored on the error on a ground ball by David Saldana, then Andrew Gaspar drove in a pair with a single through the left side to give Dallas a 3-0 lead.

Unfortunately for Dallas, that would be about all the offense they could muster on the day, and it wasn't much longer before Schreiner hit back.

The Mountaineers piled on the runs over a tough four inning stretch for Dallas.  Schreiner had three straight innings where they sent all nine batters to the plate, and sent eight batters to the plate the next inning.

They scored all 15 of their runs in that four inning stretch, all while holding the Crusaders scoreless.  Dallas managed just five baserunners on four hits after the first inning and never got a runner past second base.

Luke Gill was the anomaly, going 3-for-3 with three doubles in the game.  He ends the series with a remarkable line: 7-for-9 with four doubles, two homers, and six RBI for a slash line of .778/.778/1.889

The five seniors of the 2024 class were honored in a ceremony prior to the first pitch: Michael Andersen, Sean Hannigan, Fernando Davila, David Saldana, and Seth Medley.

The Crusaders end the season with a 21-15 overall record, their best record and first winning record since going 23-17 in 2012. Their 9-11 conference record is their best in conference play since 2013 when they went 12-8.
