Crusaders Topple #12 Trinity in Series Opener

April 19, 2024

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team defeated #12 Trinity in the opening game of their three-game conference series on Friday.  The Crusaders improved to 20-11 overall on the year and 8-7 in conference play.

Dallas 1, Trinity 0

WP: Adrian Montenegro (7-1)

LP: Joseph Chavana (7-1)

SV: Dylan Krause (1)

Adrian Montenegro scattered three hits and struck out seven across 7.0 innings of shutout ball, improving to a 7-1 record on the back of one of his best performances of the season.

Offense was difficult to come by for both teams, but one run was all it took to decide the outcome.  Paxton Huff notched the Crusaders first hit of the game, a ground-rule double, to lead off the fourth inning.  As he has done more than anyone in the conference this season, Huff stole third base, setting up Simon Turner (pictured) for the one-out RBI single that decided the game.

The Tigers managed just two baserunners from the fourth inning through the ninth as Montenegro continued to mow batters down.  Collin Johnson threw a scoreless inning of relief in the eighth, and in perhaps a move of sheer brilliance Dylan Krause was called upon to record the save in the ninth.

This was the first time Krause has been used out of the bullpen since February of last year, notching his first career save in the process.

The victory snaps a 27-game winning streak by Trinity against the Crusaders, whose last win against the Tigers came in the 2014 season.
