SENIOR SPOTLIGHT: Bresnahan, Goehring, Hovde, Offutt, Patton, Salomon, Schwartz, Taylor, and Voss from UD Baseball

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- For the next two weeks, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference will recognize and honor all of its senior spring sport student-athletes who had their final seasons cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak.

After the NCAA made the unprecedented decision on Thursday, March 12 to cancel all winter and spring championships due to the coronavirus pandemic, the SCAC Presidents Council decided to indefinitely suspend all regular season conference and non-conference competition.

"This was a heartbreaking decision we had to make," said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. "No one wanted it to come to this, but at the end of the day we are tasked with prioritizing the health and well-being of thousands of students and student-athletes on each of our campuses. That has to be the focus above all else."

Although the league held out hope that by only suspending play a window of opportunity may present itself for an abbreviated spring season with some form of tournament play the following month, with the virus continuing to spread throughout the country which has caused campuses who had originally hoped to remain open to close for the semester, the 2020 athletics season has effectively ended for over a thousand of the league's spring sport student-athletes along with the careers of 100+ seniors.

And even though some of the league's student-athletes may take advantage of a blanket waiver that would grant an additional season of participation, the SCAC office would like to honor and recognize all of its spring sport senior student athletes.

Making up the largest class of seniors among the University of Dallas spring sports is baseball with 10 student-athletes. The group matches the second largest of SCAC schools and is one behind Schreiner University's top number.

Travis Moore (Grand Prairie, Texas), Jake Schwartz (Geneva, Ill.), Austin Offutt (Frisco, Texas), Nicolas Hovde (Waco, Texas), Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.), Zach Salomon (Oklahoma City, Okla.), William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.), Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas), and Nick Goehring (Phoenix, Ariz.) form the group. These players have displayed leadership on and off the baseball diamond this season with four starters and all giving time to serve in the community through several team volunteer activities.

Patton and Voss headline the seniors on the hitting and pitching side with incredible stats that have listed their names within the top-10 of several categories in the program.

Patton lettered three seasons. He earned MVP, ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Division III West All-Region, and USCAA All-American First Team in 2018. That season was a career campaign for the third baseman, as he touted a .450 batting average (1st SCAC), and was two hits shy of tying the single-season hits record with 63. He also logged team-highs in doubles (13) and runs-batted-in (43).

In his career, Patton ranked 14th in total at bats with 427. He cracked the top-five in hits with 155 and RBI with 114. Patton's 33 career doubles checks him in sixth all-time. He smacked eight career home runs, including three his last two seasons. Patton spoke on the SCAC Baseball Media Day in 2019 and 2020. Patton is majoring in business with a concentration in finance.

Favorite memory as a SCAC student-athlete:

Nathan Patton | My favorite SCAC memory was when I had my first collegiate start and my first collegiate hit.

Voss was another three-year letterwinner and has been the team's ace most of his career. Voss also spent some of his seasons pitching in high leverage situations out of the bullpen. Voss was an SCAC First Team All-Conference Pitcher in 2019. He notched SCAC Pitcher of the Week and USCAA pitcher of the Week once that season, and was a two-time recipient of the USCAA weekly accolade in 2018, and one more time in 2017.

In a shortened season, Voss tied first in the SCAC with three wins and was atop the league in strikeouts with 29. The lefthander also led the SCAC with eight wins in 2019. Voss slid into the top-10 for a trio of categories with nine-place all-time rankings in total wins (17), strikeouts (173), and innings pitched (208).

Taylor, the final three-year letterwinner in this unit, served as a two-way player in his career spending time as a first baseman, designated hitter, and pitcher. Taylor was lethal with the bat this spring leading the squad with a .351 batting average (20-57), eight doubles, and 18 RBI. He also swiped a personal-best four stolen bases. Taylor belted five career home runs. On the mound, Taylor threw 73 innings over fours seasons. He is majoring in business with a concentration in accounting.

Goehring earned a letter in 2018. A  lefthander that was part of the staff four seasons, Goehring picked up his letter in 2018 with a career-high 12 games and totaled 22 innings. Besides one start, Goehring served as a reliever with 35.2 innings. He struck out 31 batters with double-digit totals over his first two campaigns. He entered in the team's last game this spring with a 1-2-3 inning at No. 3 Chapman University. Goehring notched SCAC Pitcher of the Week in 2018 and was on the USCAA National All-Academic Team that year. He is one-of-two seniors to be on the SCAC Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll all three seasons. Goehring is majoring in business with a concentration in finance.

Bresnahan rounds out the quintet of players to have earned a letter with the Crusaders. He lettered in 2019 after throwing in 13 games and totaling 19.1 innings, which were both career-highs. Another left-handed reliever on a staff of several southpaws, Bresnahan made 30 career appearances. His eight walks were the fewest among non-starters (10 inn. minimum) in 2019. Bresnahan is majoring in business.

Hovde was enjoying a senior season that featured him in the starting lineup in all 16 games in the outfield. Hovde batted .293 with 12 hits, three doubles, and five RBI. He scored nine runs and cracked a homer. He stole seven bases (2nd UD) and walked 13 times (led UD). He made it on the USCAA National All-Academic Team in 2019 and 2018, and was another three-time selection on the SCAC Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll. Hovde was also the SCAC Character and Community Male Student-Athlete of the Week. Hovde's biggest moment on the field was tying the game his freshman year with a triple and then scoring the winning run on a wild pitch to complete a two-out, eight-run comeback over Dallas Christian. Hovde is majoring in business with a concentration in marketing.

Favorite memory as a SCAC student-athlete:

Nicolas HovdeWalking it off against No. 5 TLU

Schwartz was on the team four seasons and had appearances in each of them. An outfielder, Schwartz knocked his first collegiate hit and RBI in same at bat versus Arlington Baptist in 2017. He was on the SCAC Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll in 2019. He is majoring in business with a concentration in sports marketing.

Offutt played four seasons with the Crusaders, appearing on the mound at least once in each one. He combined for 12.2 innings and had his longest relief effort against No. 20 Centenary College. Offutt is majoring in Pre Arch.

Favorite memory as a SCAC student-athlete:

Austin Offutt | Watching one of our pitchers throw a 100+ pitch complete game against one of the best teams in our conference, TLU, and winning the game as well.

Zach Salomon was part of the UD baseball program for three seasons. He made it onto the SCAC Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll in 2018. Primarily a pinch hitter, Salomon made at least five appearances in every season. He is majoring in business.

Travis Moore rounds out the large group of senior members on the team. He was on the team three years, joining the team with Salomon in the spring of 2017. He is majoring in psychology. (Note: Moore received a medical hardship and is a junior in athletic elegibility).

Thank you to Patton, Voss, Taylor, Goehring, Bresnahan, Hovde, Schwartz, Offutt, and Salomon for your dedication to the University of Dallas baseball team, and we wish you the best on your future endeavors.
