Crusaders Split Saturday's Twinbill at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team split its doubleheader with Schreiner University on Saturday. The Crusaders took Game One after they held the Mountaineers to just four hits and with the help of an RBI from four different Crusaders.

Game Two turned into a shootout after Schreiner scored six runs in the first two innings. Dallas used a five-run fifth inning to get back in the contest. Josh Gilliam then hit a three-run homerun in the seventh to take the second game of the series.

Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) began the game with a single and a stolen base, eventually making it to third after a passed ball. Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) walked and stole second himself. Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to centerfield. With two outs, UD kept the line moving. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) reached first on an error by the left fielder, which brought in another run. Luke Boylson (Fairview, Texas) later doubled to center field to put Dallas up 3-0 early. Both teams went scoreless in the second through the fourth inning.

In the Dallas fifth, Stickler reached first on an error and later swiped second. Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) hits a two-out double to drive in Stickler. The Mountaineers saw the bases loaded in the fifth, but Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) got out of the inning with a groundout to shortstop.

SU finally got a run across in the seventh after Ben Benavides singled in Ernest Ortiz with the bases loaded. Dallas responded in the eighth with a double and an RBI by Scott to put Dallas up 5-1. Voss kept pounding the strike zone and pitched eight solid innings for Dallas to head into the ninth. Jamie Wallace (Crockett, Texas) came in to relieve Voss on the mound in the ninth. He got a 1-2-3 inning to send Dallas away with the win.

Patton, Scott, and Stickler each had a two-hit game. Stickler scored two runs and swiped two bases. Stickler, Peterson, Scott, and Boylson all notched doubles in the game.

Voss went eight innings, only giving up four hits, and one run. He also recorded four strikeouts. Wallace pitched one perfect inning.

Austin Contreras led the Mountaineers with two hits. All four hits for SU were singles. Caleb Allen pitched the complete game, giving up nine hits, three earned runs, and one walk. Allen struck out eight Crusaders.

Schreiner got on the board early in the first inning. The Mountaineers first three batters reached base after two walks and one hit by pitch. Gilliam then smacked a grand slam. Schreiner continued to battle, but Dallas got out of the inning with no further damage. Schreiner added two runs in the bottom half of the second inning with a single and a sacrifice fly to bring runners to the plate. After being shut down for the most part in the first two innings, UD challenged Schreiner in the third.

With two outs, Abalos struck out, but reached base via a passed ball. He then stole second base. Patton followed that up with a walk. Peterson doubled and advanced to third while driving in the two runs for Dallas. Ortiz reached on a fielder's choice in the third to push the Mountaineer lead to 7-2. After a silent fourth inning, the Dallas offense exploded for a five-run fifth. Patton doubled and notched two RBI to start the comeback. Peterson then doubled in Patton. Scott later singled in Peterson. To complete the inning, Scioli doubled in a run.

SU responded with two runs in the fifth inning to regain the lead off an error and a wild pitch. UD got a runner to third with just one out on the board but was unable to push him across. Gilliam then hit his second homerun of the game with a three-run shot. UD was unable to put together anything on offense in the final innings.

Boylson led the Dallas offense with three hits. Peterson and Scott had a two-hit game, while both scoring a run. Abalos and Patton each scored twice. Peterson led UD with three RBI. Dallas had seven doubles in the game. Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) pitched 2.1 innings giving up three hits and seven runs (four earned). William Bresnahan (Windham, N.H.) went 1.2 innings on the mound, only giving up one hit. Wallace finished out the game for the Crusaders.

Gilliam had three hits, eight RBI, and two runs scored. Ortiz scored three runs and added an RBI for Schreiner. Four other Mountaineers scored two runs each. SU used three pitchers to pick up the SCAC win. Castaneda threw 4.1 shutout innings and scattered four hits while walking one and striking out six.

Dallas and Schreiner will wrap up the series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
