Crusaders route Schreiner 9-0 in 1st Game; End day with Split after 8-7 Setback

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team split the first two games of a its remaining Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series at Schreiner University on Saturday. A pair of four-run innings in the opener propelled the Crusaders to their second shutout of the campaign. After coming back to knot the later game on two occasions, a third attempt fell a run shy. Dallas moved to 6-5 in one-run games this season.

GAME 1 INFORMATION

Team Records: Dallas (13-24, 4-12 SCAC), Schreiner (12-26, 3-13 SCAC)

Pitcher Records: W) Hammonds (3-5), L) Baker (3-2)

NOTABLE STATISTICS

- Dallas matched its run and hits total with nine apiece. Five of UD's hits were doubles, which was one shy of the season-best at Dallas Christian College on April 4.

- Collecting those two-baggers included a quintet of: Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas), Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.), Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas), Enrique Vigil (San Antonio, Texas), and JP Fasone (Englewood, Colo.).

- Eight starters in the lineup recorded a hit for Dallas. Only Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was hitless from that bunch, but he reached on a walk and scored a game-high two runs. Stickler extended his on-base streak to 28.

- Hanson notched the lone multiple hit performance with two by either side. He completed a trio along with Abalos and Fasone for Crusaders with two ribbies each.

- Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) tied his career-long eight innings thrown in consecutive starts. He scattered three hits, walked two, and struck out seven. Kyle Gamez (Burleson, Texas) tossed the ninth for the combined shutout. The staff posted exactly seven strikeouts for the sixth time this year.

- The three hits allowed by UD's staff this game marked the second lowest on the campaign. However, this was the fewest base hits given up in a nine-inning contest. The lowest total was a one-hitter in a shutout on opening day, but that was a scheduled seven-inning.

- The Crusaders had five batters hit by pitch. The last time this many got plunked in a single game was the same amount in 2015 at Austin College (Apr. 18).

- Three different Schreiner hitters recorded separate hits. Sam Pistrui knocked a triple. Jonas Garcia had one of the other knocks and swiped a stolen base.

- Robert Baker threw six innings in the setback. He allowed four runs (2 earned) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Kyle Baird fanned five in three innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Neither side could get on the board through the first two innings. In the third, Dallas broke through with a four-spot to take the lead and momentum in this matchup. The Crusaders only tallied one hit in the go-ahead inning. Stickler and Abalos got hit by pitches to get two one with one retired. Hanson doubled to left center and plated the top two batters in the order. An error allowed Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) to reach and Hanson to score with two outs. Peterson wrapped up the first four-run frame by coming across home on a wild pitch.

The Mountaineers did post their first hits of the game in the bottom of the fourth. Garcia singled to left field to start the inning. He was caught stealing for the first out. This proved big as Pistrui laced a triple to right center next. A strikeout and line out ended the threat to keep the shutout going for Hammonds.

Dallas pushed the game out of reach with another four-run inning this time occurring in the eighth. Zach San Roman singled to left with one out. Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) was hit by pitch to put two on. After a second out, Jake Schwartz (Geneva, Ill.) made his collegiate debut by pinch running for San Roman. He would score his first collegiate run as well after Fasone pounded a double to left center to drive in two. Abalos continued the big inning after Stickler walked to smack a double to center field for a pair of RBI.

The road team got another run in the ninth as Patton posted the third double within the past five plate appearances and four at bats. It was the third straight hit to fall for two bases on the Crusaders' side of the lineup card. Peterson ended that stretch with just a single but it did bring Patton home.

GAME 2 INFORMATION

Team Scores: University of Dallas (7), Schreiner University (8)

Team Records: Dallas (13-25, 4-13 SCAC), Schreiner (13-26, 4-13 SCAC)

Pitcher Records: W) Kitchens (1-2), L) Griesbauer (3-2), S) Stanford (6)

NOTABLE STATISTICS

- Vigil and Scioli provided UD's multiple hit games with both outfielders going 2-for-4 with an extra base hit. The Crusaders combined for five overall.

- Vigil doubled and drove in a game-high three runners. It is the second time this month the sophomore has posted exactly three in a game and third time to eclipse that total. Vigil has 13-of-14 ribbies this month and all have come since March 29 versus Dallas Christian.

- Scioli lifted his fifth home run to give him sole possession of the team-high. Scioli has belted three of them on the road and his two runs scored have given him a three-game streak for that stat.

- Fasone added the other double. Abalos and Hanson tripled to give UD its second game of the year with that amount. The other was at Dallas Christian.

- The Crusaders matched hits (9), runs-batted-in (7), and extra base hits (5) in both games.

- Stickler was again hitless but drew two walks to extend his streak of games having reached safely to 29. The center fielder has also scored a run now in 10-of-last-12 contests.

- Colby Davenport (Crockett, Texas) started and threw four innings. He allowed four runs in the no decision. Abraham Griesbauer was saddled with the loss in 2.1 innings. William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) struck out two in 1.2 innings of work where allowed no hits or runs.

- Schreiner posted 11 hits with three doubles and a triple. Pistrui had that three-bagger as well.

- Reece Hohhertz was perfect at the plate going 4-for-4 with two ribbies and runs scored. Pistrui was the other Mountaineer with two runs driven in. Garcia swiped two steals giving him all three of SU's. His 2-for-4 counted as the other team's multiple hit performer. He scored three runs.

- Caleb Allen started on the bump and threw 6.2 innings. He surrendered five runs on five hits and walked three. Allen did strikeout seven. Kolby Kitchens earned the win going 1.1 innings of relief.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Mountaineers quickly matched their hit total from game one within the first four batters of the second game. A fly out to left started the home half, but Garcia doubled to right center and that sparked a stretch of four straight knocks. Pistrui tripled to bring him in. RBI hits by Hohhertz and Hunter Bazan completed a three-run frame. Schreiner added another run in the third to stretch its largest lead of the game 4-0.

Dallas was being no-hit through four innings, but a quartet of runs crossed home and created a brand new ballgame with both teams having four. With one out, San Roman walked and Scioli singled to put runners on first and second. Vigil drove both of them on a double and then Abalos tripled to score Vigil and Stickler, who had walked the batter before.

Sammy Garcia ripped an RBI-hit in the sixth to put Schreiner back on top 5-4. It was not a withstanding edge as UD countered the next half inning with a run on Scioli's lead-off long ball.

Still, the Crusaders never led at all in this one, and Schreiner responded after a seventh inning stretch to a trio of runs that would be enough to hold off a late opposition comeback attempt. Hohhertz singled the go-ahead run to right field. Two more runs lifted the home Maroon to an 8-5 advantage.

Runs were scored in an inning for the fourth straight turn a team batted. Dallas scratched two across in the top of the eighth. Hanson tripled to lead things off. Patton singled him in. With two outs, Vigil singled to left and scored Patton. However two were left on as the Crusaders could not get runners beyond first and second after that knock.

A perfect ninth that included two strikeouts by Payton Stanford sealed his sixth save of the year.
