Game of Errors favors Austin College over Baseball Sunday

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team fell 7-4 in the series finale on Sunday at Austin College. The Crusaders dropped the past three in the non-conference sweep against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) foe. After Dallas took its first lead of the game with three runs in the seventh (4-3), the 'Roos put together four in the eighth to rally back.

GAME INFORMATION

Records: Dallas (4-12), Austin (9-5)

It was a scoreless game until the bottom of the second. A two out error by UD's third baseman Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, OHIO) would give Austin College a 1-0 edge. The Crusaders benefited from a miscue in their next trip up, as freshman Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) raced to second on a throwing error by the first baseman. Abalos had legged out a single to start the third, and scored on a single by senior Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas). Villanueva was out at second on the play, but the scoreboard was knotted again.

The 'Roos would gain the lead in the bottom of the fourth as James Arguello singled to drive in Thomas Oberg. Two innings later, Scott Gelbart tripled to left center, and Oberg scored his second run at the time.

Dallas came to life in the seventh by tallying four hits and putting three on the board. Two singles by Abalos and senior Rene Vargas, Jr. jump started the top of the inning. After the next two hitters made outs, junior Zach San Roman made it safely to first on an error by the short stop that plated two runs. With the score tied, Dallas would eventually load the bases and junior JP Fasone (Englewood, Colo.) lifted the guests with a single that scored San Roman. However, Peterson would be thrown out at home to end the threat.

It was an error in the eighth that opened the door for Austin College to capture the final momentum of the contest. Gelbart reached on the error and Oscar Gonzalez scored the game-tying run. A sacrifice fly out gave AC a 5-4 lead and the home side never relinquished it back. Austin Dudley widened the gap with a two-RBI single. The pair of runs were unearned.
