Austin College Walks-Off to secure Pitching Duel; Baseball goes 0-2 Saturday

SHERMAN, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games on Saturday at Austin College. The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) foe claimed game one in a 1-0 walk-off fashion. The second game favored the 'Roos 11-3.

GAME ONE INFORMATION

Teams: University of Dallas (0), Austin College (1)

Records: Dallas (4-10), Auston (7-5)

Pitching decisions: W) Lewis (3-1) L) Marshall (0-1)

The Crusaders outhit Austin College eight to three in the series-opener, but it was a failed double play ball that would lift the home team in the low scoring contest.

Dallas left nine runners on base in the game, but were limited to only a couple of major scoring opportunities in an otherwise pitcher's duel. In the top of the fourth, freshman Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.) singled to short stop and advanced senior Rene Vargas, Jr. to third with one out. Martin stole second, but neither runner got home as a strikeout and foul out ended the Crusaders' threat.

In the bottom half of the frame, the 'Roos had a chance to get a runner in from 90 feet and two outs, but would not get him in as Thomas Oberg lifted a fly ball to center field. Gus Daniel had moved to third base with Oberg at the plate, going to second on a pass ball and third on a balk.

The Navy and White would leave two more runners on in the top of the fifth and eighth. A one-out double by Mark Peterson (Cincinnati, Ohio) in the seventh also gave the guests another runner in scoring position.

Finally, Gonzalez would lead off the ninth inning with a single back up the middle and raced to second base on a steal. He would be sacrificed to third with one out. An intentional walk to Scott Gelbart setup a needed double play ball. The Crusaders got what they were looking for, but Austin Dudley was ruled safe to beat the twin-killer, and give AC the triumph.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

- Senior Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas), junior Zach San Roman (Miami, Fla.), and Peterson compiled six of the team's eight base knocks. Each member of the trio had two.

- The middle of the UD order (spots 3-6) had at least one hit. Peterson boasted a double. Freshman Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas) drew one of the team's three walks. AC also had three free passes.

- Junior Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) kept the 'Roos off-balance, giving seven innings in the start. He threw a shutout and limited the opponent to a pair of hits. He walked one and struck out three.

- Classmate William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) was saddled in the tough setback going 1.2 innings, and allowed a run on a hit. He walked two and fanned none.

- For Austin College offensively, Gonzalez nabbed two of the team's three hits. He also scored the go-ahead run. Daniel had the other knock for the Maroon and Gold.

- Josh Lewis went the complete distance. He kept Dallas shutout through a complete, nine-inning game. He walked three and struck out four.

GAME TWO INFORMATION

Teams: University of Dallas (3), Austin (11)

Records: Dallas (4-11), Austin (8-5

Pitching decisions: W) Parish (3-1) L) Griesbauer (1-2)

In the second game, Dallas was unable to overcome two major scoring innings for the 'Roos. It was a quick four run deficit after the first inning. Through the first four batters, Austin College had scored three times on four hits. Gelbart and Daniel had the big hits with a double and single, respectively.

The Crusaders put together their best inning offensively on the day in the top of the third. A two-run, three-hit frame would cut the margin in half on the scoreboard. Peterson bulked up his team-lead in runs-batted-in to 12. Vargas, Jr. would get the other ribbie on a ground out back to the pitcher. Peterson scored.

It was not enough for Dallas, however, as a six-run fifth was enough to put the game out of reach. Tyler Tarbox and Gonzalez both recorded two-RBI doubles to provide most of the offense in the five-hit inning.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE:

- Dallas was outhit 14-9 and committed four errors compared to none by the Maroon and Gold.

- Freshman Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) and Arnold both had multiple hits with 2-for-4 performances each. Scioli and Peterson logged extra base knocks for doubles. All three players mentioned in this bullet point scored on Saturday.

- Arnold picked up a stolen base. Martin joined the above mentioned RBI column with of his own.

- Sophomore Abraham Griesbauer got the start and gave up four runs on five hits with two walks. Classmate Blake Palmer (Coppell, Texas) went three innings of relief and Kyle Gamez (Buda, Texas) allowed a run on two hits in the final two innings of pitching. Gamez and Palmer both fanned three opponent hitters.

- Five of the 'Roos 14 hits were credited as doubles. Gelbart led the group with two, Tarbox, Oberg, and Gonzalez with one apiece.

- Forming a trio of three-for-five days for AC included: Oberg, Gelbart, and Dudley. Gelbart had three ribbies and Gonzalez drove in a pair along with Tarbox. Gonzalez, Gelbart, and Daniel each scored twice in the game.

- Oberg notched two steals and Jeremy Halford added a swipe.

- Mychael Parish went six innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on four hits. He walked one and struck out four.
