Big Innings cost Baseball on Saturday Against LeTourneau

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team dropped two games on Saturday afternoon to LeTourneau University. In game one, the two squads battled beyond a scheduled seven inning contest. The Yellowjackets would prevail in eight with an 8-3 victory. Dallas allowed a seven-run first inning in game two en route to a 10-0 setback in another seven-inning game.

GAME ONE INFORMATION

Final Score: LeTourneau University (8), University of Dallas (3)

Records: LeTourneau (2-5), Dallas (2-7)

Pitching decisions: W) Carns (1-2), L) Hammonds (1-2)

After allowing a run in the first inning to LeTourneau University, the Crusaders flexed their muscles with a three run, four hit bottom half. UD took advantage of field errors to keep the inning going, and would end up batting around the entire lineup in the frame. Freshmen Mark Resnick (Houston, Texas,) and Thomas Martin (Vancouver, Wash.) had key base hits and combined for the three runs-batted-in.

The Yellowjackets worked their way back to an even ballgame with a run in the third and fourth inning. Taylor Empkey had an RBI groundout to second base that drove in Jacob Faubion. In the next at-bat for the road squad, Bryce Henry put the ball in play for a fielder's choice. Kyle Jacobs would score after the relay throw on an attempted double play was thrown too high.

After that it was a battle on both sides to gather any momentum. Heading to the eighth inning created an extra inning scenario, LETU produced five runs to secure the victory. With the bases loaded and one out, junior Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) notched two of his three strikeouts in a row. However, a wild pitch on the last punch out allowed all the runners to advance and plated Walker Blake for the opponent. Perkins widened the margin with a bases clearing hit on the next at-bat.

Final Score: LeTourneau University (10), University of Dallas (0)

Records: LeTourneau (3-5), Dallas (2-8)

Pitching decisions: W) Harlan (1-1), L) Felchak (0-4)

A big first inning in game two would push Dallas in a 7-0 deficit that was too much to overcome. Three errors on two plays within the first three batters open the frame up. Kyle Jacobs followed the sequence with a two-RBI single to left center that lifted LETU ahead 3-0 at the time. After another RBI-single from Dylan Wadyko, the biggest swing came from Sean Sellers on a double that cleared the bases that had been juiced.

The Yellowjackets added two in the fourth inning and another in the fifth. Dallas was blanked for the first time this season, but did have a couple opportunities throughout the contest. The Crusaders left seven on.
