Baseball drops two in Home-Openers against East Texas Baptist University

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team fell in a doubleheader on Saturday to East Texas Baptist University. The final score in game one was an 11-3 final (7 innings), while the nightcap reflected a 6-1 result.

Records: East Texas Baptist (3-1), Dallas (2-5)

Pitcher decisions: W) Loson (1-1), L) Hammonds (1-1)

Dallas fell behind early in the first inning, as the visiting Tigers walloped three straight hits to open the game, and got on the scoreboard with a run after Dynas Doud punched a double at the end of those knocks. The first five hitters for the opposition reached, as an error by UD's shortstop would be next and Kameron Sumrall crushed a three-run homer over the left field wall just left of the foul pole. There was a triple by Cullen Adams after next two batters made outs, but he was stranded to leave the Crusaders in a 5-0 deficit.

In the bottom half of the inning, Dallas got a run back as senior Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas) reached on an error by the Tigers' short stop. Junior Zach San Roman (Miami, Fl.) made them pay with a two-out RBI double down left field line.

Two innings later, ETBU would widen the gap with four more runs. With the first two Tigers getting on base via a single and walk, Conner Combs placed a sacrifice bunt down that wound up being a throwing error by the pitcher. With a run already across on the play, a second miscue would cost another run as the ball got tossed out of play on an attempt at home. Combs would be awarded home before another pitch was thrown on a balk called on UD.

The Crusaders did score in the bottom of the third as freshman Mark Resnick (Houston, Texas), singled back to the pitcher and Villanueva raced around from second after a throwing error on the play. Dallas was behind too far, as the guests claimed the seven-inning contest.
