A two-run eighth lifts Baseball to first conference Series win Sunday

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team (6-12, 2-1 SCAC) claimed its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series-win, by defeating Schreiner University (4-14, 1-2) on Sunday. Dallas took the rubber match with a 5-3 final.

After both teams got on the board in the opening frames, neither team would score again until past the sixth. The Crusaders built an early advantage, 3-0, in their first at bat.

Sophomore Alex Stack (Keller, Texas) singled to drive in two runners, seniors Hunter Berry (Keller, Texas) and Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas). Freshman Patch Healy (Plano, Texas) helped produce the third run with a sacrifice fly out to plate senior Trevor Keele (Edgewood, Texas).

Keele ripped four hits in five at-bats to pace the Navy and White's offense, which matched SU for nine total. Sophomore Zach San Roman (Miami, Fla.), Stack, Berry, Healy, and Villanueva all chipped into the hit category in the win.

A trio of base knocks counted as extra base hits for UD, with the biggest soaring off San Roman's bat in the eighth to shatter a 3-3 knotted affair. The catcher blasted a double to drive in sophomore Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas) and Healy.

It marked the second contest in as many days that the Crusaders broke ahead in the latter innings. Yesterday, the visitors evened the conference series with a two-run ninth to eventually prevail 8-6.

Stack finished with a strong performance, driving in two and ripping the final double of the afternoon for Dallas.

The Mountaineers nipped the deficit to one, immediately in the bottom of the first. Bret Hill doubled to drive in two of the Maroon and White's three overall RBI. Hill was one of two players with a multi-hit effort.

Tallying the most hits for Schreiner was Hagen Fryrear with three. The home team tied things in the sixth, but were unable to get over the hump in the finale.

Junior Denton Martin (Denton, Texas) made his third start on the hill this campaign and threw four innings of two-run baseball. He worked around six hits and a pair of walks, while fanning four.

Sophomore William Marshall (Frisco, Texas) garnered his first victory of the season (1-0) in relief. He struck out three while sitting down the final nine Mountaineers the right handed hurler faced.

Keele notched his second save of the weekend, and third overall with a perfect ninth. He sat down the first two opponents via strikeout, and locked down the game with a ground out to third.

For Schreiner, Charlie Stewart (1-3) was saddled with the setback, going 7.1 and surrendering five runs on eight hits. He walked five and struck out six. Blake Rowan finished the outing with 1.2 innings pitched. Rowan walked one and gave up a hit.
