Dallas Baseball falls to Castleton on Wednesday

IRVING, TEXAS – The University of Dallas baseball team (4-3) dropped a 17-2 contest on Wednesday afternoon verses Castleton State College (1-2). Dallas allowed season-highs with 17 runs and 19 hits in the setback, while the Spartans claimed their first win of the campaign.

The Crusaders would post five hits altogether with junior Tug McRoberts (Beaumont, Texas) batting .500 (2-for-4) to pace the offense. The center fielder also crossed the plate once, as the Navy and White got on the scoreboard in the final two frames.

Senior Luciano Villanueva (San Antonio, Texas) would score in the eighth inning to ruin the shutout bid Castleton had at the time.

Also posting base knocks in the affair were sophomore Avery Arnold (McKinney, Texas), and freshman Patch Healy (Plano, Texas) and Cody Dion (Keller, Texas).

Devin Hayes (1-0) earned the win after tossing seven innings and allowing no runs, two hits, two walks, and striking out five. Mike LaBeau and TJ Fearon each toed the rubber for an inning.

Nine pitchers appeared for UD in this one, with senior Martin Cronin (Bastrop, Texas) being tabbed with the start. The righty was tagged with the loss (1-1) after compiling a run, hit, and walk allowed.

Sophomore Ryan Hammonds (Cedar Hill, Texas) pitched the lone perfect inning for the Navy and White, sitting down the side in order for a scoreless second.

Zach Bahan paced the Spartans' offense with four hits in five at bats, while driving in five runners. He hit one of the squads' pair of round-trippers in the game.

Tyler Lord was right behind with three hits, including a double and triple, with one batted in. Nate Swahn collected three RBI and was part of a quartet of players that recorded two hits, and round out the unit of multi-hit performers.

Castleton took advantage of nine walks and tallied seven extra base hits.
