Five Crusaders named to 2013 All-SCAC Baseball 'First Team'

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Five from the University of Dallas baseball team -- Andrew Bossert, Mark Carlson, Trevor Keele, Alex Thornton and Rene Vargas, Jr. -- have been named by the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) to the 2013 All-SCAC Baseball First Team.

Bossert (Friendswood, Texas) was one of seven pitchers designated to the first team. The 6-foot-4 junior right-hander went 7-3 in 2013 and finished ranked as following in the SCAC: 87.2 innings pitched (first), 15 games started (first), 2.57 earned run average (third), seven wins (third) and 58 batters struck out (tied third). 

Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) was one of two second baseman selected to the first team. The 6-foot junior finished ranked as following in the SCAC: seven hit by pitches (eighth), nine stolen bases (14th) and a .402 slugging percentage (15th).

Keele (Edgewood, Texas) was one of three first baseman pegged to the first team. The 6-foot-1 sophomore finished ranked as following int he SCAC: 43 games (first), six home runs (second), four sacrifice flies (second), 32 runs batted in (second), a .440 slugging percentage (fourth), 50 hits (sixth), two triples (sixth), 175 plate appearances (seventh), 10 doubles (eighth), a .336 batting average (ninth) and a .408 on-base percentage (16th). Fielding wise, Keele registered 261 put outs (second), 16 double plays (seventh) and a .989 fielding percentage (seventh). 

Thornton (Fort Worth, Texas) was one of six outfielders relegated to the first team. The 6-foot junior center fielder finished ranked as following in the SCAC: 43 games (first), three home runs (fourth), 13 doubles (sixth), two triples (sixth), 67 total bases (eighth), a .450 slugging percentage (10th), three sacrifice hits (12th) and 16 walks (13th).

Vargas, Jr. (San Antonio) was one of three shortstops tabbed to the first team. The 5-foot-7 freshman finshed ranked as following in the SCAC: six sacrifice hits (first), 18 walks (seventh), a .331 batting average (10th), 10 stolen bases (11th), a .418 on-base percentage (12th), 42 hits (13th) and 40 games (15th). Fielding wise, Vargas totalled 87 assists (fifth) and seven double plays (16th).
