Baseball cruises to victory over East Texas Baptist University, behind supercharged bats and solid pitching

IRVING, Texas - After being held to 11 runs in their previous five contests (1-4), the University of Dallas baseball team (20-10) broke out in a big way offensively late Tuesday afternoon versus East Texas Baptist University (ETBU), defeating the Tigers in a single nine-inning affair, 15-1.

Reaching the 20 win plateau, the Crusaders started sophomore Andrew Laux (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.), whom entered winless on the season with a 4.44 Earned Run Average (ERA). Laux (1-2), however, was phenomenal versus ETBU, as he allowed a mere five hits over seven innings, while being charged one earned run. Just as Laux, the Crusader offense was firing on all cylinders.

Dallas began the scoring in the 2nd inning, when catcher Varea Costello (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) laid down a safety-squeeze bunt which scored right-fielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) from third base -- Costello was safe, as the Tigers first baseman, second baseman and pitcher all converged on the bunted ball. After Costello's RBI bunt single, the Dallas offense unleashed a torrent of runs.

The Crusaders scored another run in the 2nd inning, three more runs in the 3rd and five runs in the 4th inning. With third baseman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) and center-fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.) on base, freshman Andrew Bossert put the exclamation on the victory by crushing a three-run homerun over the left-field fence, much to the delight of the Dallas faithful. The homerun was Bossert's second of the year and pushed his RBI count up to 18, the second highest output on the team thus far.

Sophomore Chris Schierhorn (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) pitched two scoreless innings to close out the game for the Crusaders. Schierhorn posted a strikeout in six batters faced.
