Baseball pushes in 11th inning run for Game 1 victory over Southwestern University, but the Pirates' bats prove too much in Game 2 of doubleheader for Crusaders

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (16-6) was triumphant in Game 1 of their doubleheader versus Southwestern University, on Saturday afternoon, by a score of 4-3 in extra innings. The Crusaders, however, fell in Game 2, 14-3, to the Pirates.  

Game 1: Dallas 4, Southwestern University 3 (F/11) Boxscore

It took a double in the 11th inning by Varea Costello (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) for Dallas to notch the 4-3 victory. Costello's smash scored Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.), who got on base with a one out single.  

Starting on the mound for the Crusaders was senior right-handed pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga./The Lovett School). After an atypical outing, he was replaced in the 3rd inning by junior Michael Schweiss(Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.). Schweiss ended up pitching eight and two-thirds scoreless innings, giving up only three hits, while striking out 11 Tigers at the plate.

With the win, Schweiss has improved his record to a perfect 5-0, and is the owner of a miniscule .22 ERA on the season.

Game 2: Dallas 3, Southwestern University 14 Boxscore

In the back-half of the doubleheader, Dallas was held scoreless until the 7th inning. In the inning, senior shortstop David Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.) and junior center fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.) produced the lone RBIs (three) for the Crusaders. Despite nine hits on the game, Dallas couldn't muster more runs.

As for the defensive side of the field, Dallas used five pitchers in the game, who combined to give up 14 runs, all earned. Junior Michael Byers (Manassas, Va./Seton Home School) was hit with the loss.

Dallas' next game will take place on Wed., March 23, on the road against Texas Wesleyan University. First pitch will occur at 3:00 p.m. in Fort Worth, Texas, with the Rams.
