Baseball jumps on Arlington Baptist College early, defeats Patriots soundly at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (15-5) continued their winning ways on Thursday evening, at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, knocking off the Arlington Baptist College Patriots, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), in a nine inning game, 7-2.

Senior right-handed pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga./The Lovett School) started on the mound for Dallas, and in three innings of work, blanked the Patriots in hits and walks, but did hit a batter in the 3rd inning. Carkhuff received all the run support Dallas needed, in the 1st inning, as the Crusaders posted a four spot on the scoreboard.

To begin the bottom of the 4th inning, junior right-handed pitcher Michael Byers (Manassas, Va./Seton Home School) took over for Carkhuff. Byers, the winning pitcher on record (4-0), struck out two Arlington Baptist batters, while allowing just one hit in two full innings on the mound.

Other pitchers entering the game for the Crusaders include Chris Schierhorn (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.), Andrew Laux (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.), Dylan Myers (Rosebud, Texas/Rosebud-Lott H.S.) and Michael Schweiss (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.).

Perhaps seeking to replicate great pitching performances from the 2010 Major League Baseball Postseason, including the World Series, which took place at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington five months ago, Dallas was able to hold Arlington Baptist to two runs on six hits.

In support of the Dallas pitching staff, the Crusaders played not only stout defense, but hit the ball quite well.

Third baseman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) could make a case for being the game's most valuable player, as the sophomore accounted for six defensive assists -- including some dazzling diving stops -- in addition to going 4-for-4 at the plate for the Crusaders. He knocked in two RBIs.

Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) impressed as well for Dallas -- the junior played some left field and first base. Arnold's performance was on par with that of Allred's. At the plate, Arnold had three hits -- including a triple -- and a walk, while scoring three runs. He's now batting .348 on the season.

Meanwhile, David Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.) tallied two hits of his own (single, double), had two RBIs and scored a run. Defensively, at shortstop, Rettinger netted two assists.

Up next for Dallas, will be a doubleheader (2x9) at Southwestern University, on Saturday, March 19. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
