Baseball splits pair of road games against Howard Payne University

BROWNWOOD, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (8-3) went 1-1 on Tuesday afternoon on the road versus the Howard Payne University YellowJackets. After losing Game 1 of the doubleheader, 4-2, the Crusaders responded in a big way in Game 2, winning convincingly, 9-2.

Game 1: Dallas, 2, Howard Payne University 4 Boxscore

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Andrew Laux (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.) made his fourth start of the young season for head coach Fraser Holmes' Dallas squad. Laux's outing went well unitl the YellowJackets were able score the game's first run in the 3rd-inning, before putting a three spot on the scoreboard in the 4th-inning. In three innings of work, Laux allowed four runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks, while Dallas picked up three errors. He also struckout three batters.

Senior right-handed pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga./The Lovett School) made his seventh appearance of the season, in relief for Laux. Carkhuff in three innings of work, gave up two hits, while retiring two.

Left fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) and center-fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.) accounted for Dallas' two runs, while freshman second baseman Mark Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Home School) netted two of the Crusaders' five hits on the game. 

Game 2: Dallas 9, Howard Payne University 2 Boxscore

In the second game, freshman pitcher Chris Schierhorn (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) got the start, going 3 1/3 innings, and allowing two runs on 10 hits before being replaced by freshman left-handed pitcher Dylan Meyers (Rosebud, TX/Rosebud-Lott H.S.). Right-handed pitcher Andrew Bossert (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood H.S.) also saw action.  Meyers and Bossert combined for 3 and 2/3 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and giving Chris Schierhorn the win.  

Some notable Crusader performers in Game 2 include left fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) and sophomore catcher/designated hitter Jame Kerin (East Greenwich, R.I./East Greenwich H.S.). Arnold tallied three hits and a run in four at-bats, sparking a four run 5th inning with a double, while also picking up a walk in the game. Meanwhile, Kerin, in his second game of the season, had two hits, two runs and an RBI.

Up next for Dallas will be a trip to QuikTrip Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, to play Robert Morris (Chi.). in a 2x7 doubleheader beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 3. The games were originally scheduled to be played at Crusader Field, but were changed with it being midterm week.
