Baseball wins both games of doubleheader versus Bates College, runs record to 7-2

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (7-2) was perfect on Saturday, Feb. 26, defeating Bates College, 7-1 and 7-6, in their Saturday doubleheader.

Game1: Dallas 7, Bates College 1 Boxscore

The Crusaders weekend began well as they scored in the 1st inning of Game 1 of the doubleheader. Bates College (Maine) tied the game in the top of the 2nd inning but the score did not remain tied for long. After the top of the order -- Arnold, Shelburne, and Rettinger -- reached base, sophomore right fielder Adam Farris(Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) crushed a grand slam over the left field fence.

Farris' grand slam was more than enough run support for Dallas starter senior Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School) who surrendered only one earned run on three hits in six innings pitched. FreshmanDylan Myers (Rosebud, Texas/Rosebud-Lott H.S.) closed the game by throwing a scoreless 7th inning. Freshman Zach Cannon (Tyler, Texas/ Robert E. Lee H.S.) started at designated hitter and went 2-for-2 with a run scored while fellow freshman Mark Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Home School) went 2-for-3 as the starting second baseman.

Game 2: Dallas 7, Bates College 6 Boxscore

While Dallas took Game 1 of their Saturday doubleheader with ease, a Game 2 victory was much more difficult to obtain. Once again, things began well for Dallas as the Crusaders scored three runs in the 1st inning. Several of those runs came from trickery and smart base running by the Crusaders. Junior center fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.) took off from first base on a delayed steal which drew a throw from the pitcher. As the throw went to first, junior left fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) easily stole home. On the throw home, Shelburne was able to advance to second. Dallas scored two more runs in the bottom of the 1st inning and added another in the 2nd to give themselves an early 4-0 lead over the visiting Bobcats.

In the 5th inning, junior Michael Byers (Manassas, Va./Seton Home School) worked himself into trouble and was not helped by his defense. Third baseman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) made a questionable decision by attempting to make the third out by tagging a runner advancing from second instead of throwing to first base. The umpire ruled the runner safe on the play which left the bases loaded with two outs. On a full count Byers surrendered a grand slam just inside the left field foul pole. Coach Holmes replaced Byers with junior Michael Schweiss (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) in order to hold Bates College from scoring any more runs. Schweiss recorded the third out to end the long inning.

Dallas responded with a run of their own to tie the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the 5th inning before surrendering another run in the top of the 6th inning. The Crusaders' error came as freshman Mark Carlson attempted to turn a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning. Carlson misfielded the ball in his rush to turn the play and did not record an out.

In the bottom of the 7th, everything came together with the top of the order leading off the inning. Arnold reached on a walk, Shelburne singled him over to second and Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.) advanced Arnold to third and Shelburne to second on a groundout. Arnold came in to score on a passed ball and Shelburne scored when Michael Morrison (Dallas, Texas/Lake Hill Prep) executed the suicide squeeze to perfection. Schweiss shut down the Bates College hitters for another two innings, earning the win, his 4thwin of the season.
