Baseball defeats Texas Lutheran University in Game 3, claims series

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (5-2) picked up another win against Texas Lutheran University, as the Crusaders defeated the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon, 5-2, and in the process took the series. 

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Andrew Laux (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.) got the start for Dallas, going four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits. He walked two batters and recorded a strike out, before junior right-handed pitcher Michael Schweiss (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) entered the game in the 5th inning of the nine-inning affair. Schweiss (3-0), in the winning effort, struck out two while allowing three hits and zero runs. 

Texas Lutheran jumped out to an early lead when Bulldog catcher Evan Curtis scored in the 2nd inning, as center fielder D. Harvey grounded out to Crusader freshman second baseman Mark Carlson (Hawthorn Woods, Ill./Home School). The Bulldogs went up 2-0 in the 4th inning, as Curtis scored after Harvey reached on an error. 

Dallas got on the scoreboard for the first time in the 6th inning, when senior shortstop David Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.) flied out to the center fielder, allowing junior left fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, TX/McKinney H.S.) to trot home for the score. 

The Crusaders found paydirt once again, in the 8th inning, when an error allowed the freshman first baseman Andrew Bossert (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood H.S.) to reach base, while right fielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) rounded third before scoring. 

Dallas broke open the 2-2 tie in the top-half of the 9th inning, en route to the 4-2 victory. Farris scored the Crusaders' third run when junior catcher Varea Costello (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) singled. An error allowed Dallas to produce their fourth run, as Bossert advanced to third base before coming around for the unearned run. 

Up next for the Crusaders will a Saturday, Feb. 26, doubleheader versus Bates College (Iowa). First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Crusader field.
