Baseball wins big over the University of Central Oklahoma

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (3-1) defeated the University of Central Oklahoma Knights in a single nine-inning game on Wednesday afternoon, by a score of 7-0.

Dallas jumped out to an early lead, as left-fielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) scored after initially singling. Arnold took advantage of a wild pitch and fielding woes by the Knights in the 1st inning, coming around to score and crediting the RBI to Crusader center fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.).

The Crusaders chased Central Oklahoma's starting pitcher Uriah Fisher after just three-innings of work, due in large part to getting to him for five runs in the third inning.

In the 3rd, Shelburne bunted in Arnold on what appeared to be a squeeze play. Shortstop David Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.), shortly after, knocked in Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.). Also scoring in the inning were Shelburne, right fielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) and Allred.

Senior pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga./The Lovett School), now 2-0, came in to pitch for Andrew Laux (Keller, Texas/Keller H.S.) in the 5th inning. In four innings of work, Laux allowed two hits and a walk, while allowing no runs.

In his two innings of work, Carkhuff, the winning pitcher, allowed just one hit and fanned three batters. Also appearing for the Crusaders, pitching-wise, were freshman lefty Dylan Myers (Rosebud, Texas/Rosebud-Lott H.S.) and righty Andrew Bossert (Friendswood, Texas/Friendswood H.S.), the starting first baseman.

Dallas tacked on the game's seventh and final run, one inning later, as junior catcher Varea Costello scored thanks to a single from Allred.

Up next for the Crusaders will be a Feb. 19-20 weekend series at Texas Lutheran University. The two teams square off in a double-header (1x7, 1x9) on Saturday, beginning at 12:00 p.m., before concluding play on Sunday with a single 9-inning game at 1:00 p.m.
