Baseball Trio Honored by USCAA

Sophomore outfielder/infielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.), freshman outfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian H.S.), and junior pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School) were honored by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) at seasons end.  Shelburne and Farris were named honorable mention All-American while Carkhuff was selected as an Academic All-American.

Shelburne once again grabbed headlines after an impressive freshman campaign that saw him tear the cover off the ball.  To avoid any claims of a sophomore slump, he maintained his torrid hitting while playing in both the infield and outfield for UD.  Shelburne finished with a team leading .338 batting average (45-133), 12 doubles, tied for first with 3 triples, finished second on the squad with 45 hits, 24 RBI, 33 runs scored, 12 stolen bases, and tied for second with 63 total bases.  His .474 slugging percentage and .440 on base percentage were good enough for third and fourth place rankings on the team.

Farris followed Shelburne's impressive freshman season, and made a splash of his own his rookie campaign by batting .333 (40-120) to finish as the team leader or near the top in several major offensive categories. He led the team in total bases with 70, slugging percentage at .583, on base percentage at .463, homeruns with 5, runs scored with 36, stolen bases with 15, walks with 27, and was tied for the lead with Shelburne in triples with 3.  He was also tied for second in batting average behind Shelburne with his .333 clip, and third in RBI (22) and hits (40). He also stroked 9 doubles in his debut season.

Carkhuff battled through a mid-season arm injury to wrap up the season and was recently honored for his efforts on and off the field.  The righty was utilized as a starter and a reliever over course of the season and flourished in both roles.  In a team leading 19 appearances spanning fifty nine and two thirds innings (tied for first), the Classics major put together a 4-3 record, 4 saves, and 77 strikeouts.  The 77 strikeouts led the team, and his 11.78 strikeouts per nine inning rate put him at tenth in the nation according to the latest NCAA D3 baseball summary.  His win total tied him for first on the squad and his 4 saves established the UD single season record.
