UD Baseball Loses First, Wins Second of Doubleheader In Chicago

In the University of Dallas baseballs team's annual trip to the Windy City, Dallas split their doubleheader with the University of Chicago 5-14 and 7-5.  Dallas held a 4-1 lead after their half of the third inning in game one, but Chicago came back for the win.  Thankfully the tables turned in the second game as UD came from behind two times for the 2 run victory.

Junior infielder Martin Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) led UD at the plate with 3 hits.  Lopez went 3-3, including a double, and added an RBI and a run scored.  A trio of Crusaders added 3 hits including junior infielder Dave Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.), freshman outfielder Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.), and freshman outfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian H.S.).  Rettinger also stroked a home run, added an RBI, and scored twice.  Senior infielder and Illinois native Sean McSheffery (Woodridge, IL/Downers Grove North) drove in 2 runs in front of his home crowd.  UD used four different pitchers with senior righty Joe Zimmermann (Woodstock, MD/Chapelgate) getting the start.

Rettinger had another huge game in the 7-5 win as he went 2-3 at the plate with 3 RBI and 2 runs scored.  He stroked a 2 run double in the 3 run third inning, and led off the sixth inning with another solo homerun, his second of the day.  Lopez and Farris added 2 hits for the second consecutive game, and the duo was joined by sophomore infielder/outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) who also achieved the feat.  Junior righty Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, GA/The Lovett School), who pitched the last four and two third innings, picked up the win for Dallas.  He struck out an impressive 8 batters in the relief effort.

UD and the University of Chicago get right back into it tomorrow afternoon as the teams concluded the three game series with a nine inning back on campus.  First pitch is scheduled for 1:00pm.
