UD Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Dallas Christian College

The UD baseball teams jumped out to an early before walking away with a 4-1 win in the opener and taking the second game 18-3 in dominating fashion.  UD scored 18 runs with big innings of 7 and 6 runs in the fourth and fifth innings, before Dallas Christian got on the board to avoid the shutout with 3 runs in the seventh.

In game one, sophomore centerfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) accounted for the only 2 RBI as he went 2-4 at the plate, and four different team members crossed the plate once in the 6 hit game for UD.  Senior Joe Zimmermann (Woodstock, MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy) started and picked up his third win of the year.  He tossed four innings, gave up only 2 hits, and struckout 3.

The second game was the complete opposite as UD belted out 15 hits and 18 runs, and Dallas Christian aided the home team with 6 errors.  Senior infielder Sean McSheffery (Woodridge, IL/Downers Grove North) was the lone Dallas member with 3 hits.  He went 3-5 at the plate with his second double of the year while driving in 3 and scoring once.  The trio of freshman catcher Delano Ponce (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque Academy), freshman rightfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian H.S.), and freshman outfielder James Kerin (East Greenwich, RI/East Greenwich H.S.) all collected 2 hits in the lopsided win.  Ponce went 2-5, added 2 RBI, and scored 3 times; Farris went 2-3 with an RBI and 3 runs scored; and Kerin went 2-2 in two plate appearances as a pinch hitter and a centerfielder while driving in a run.  Ten of twelve batters that came to the plate for Dallas recorded at least one hit, nine people recorded RBI, and 10 scored as UD forced Dallas Christian to use 6 different pitchers.  Sophomore starter Michael Byers (Front Royal, VA/Seton Home School) recorded his first win as he went four scoreless innings while scattering 3 hits and striking out 3.

The UD baseball team has a few days of rest before traveling to Chicago, IL for a 3 game series against the University of Chicago on April 10 and 11.  Looking to ride a mini 3 game winning streak, UD will kickoff the doubleheader against Chicago on April 10 at 1:00pm.  The nine inning game on April 11 also starts at 1:00pm.
