Dallas Baseball Drops Texas Wesleyan Game in Extra Innings

On a perfect Monday afternoon the 5-16 UD baseball team headed to nearby Fort Worth for a nine inning game against the Texas Wesleyan Rams on March 23 that turned in to much more.  After scoring first in the second inning, UD took a backseat to the Rams 3-2 after three innings.  Two scoreless frames later the Crusaders put up 2 more before the Rams answered back with a run for the 4-4 tie.  The Rams took the lead in the bottom half of inning number eight before UD scored a run in their final attempt at evening the game.  Deadlocked at 5, UD held Texas Wesleyan scoreless in the bottom of the ninth before the two teams went scoreless for three more frames.  After UD was unable to plate a run in the top of the thirteenth inning, Texas Wesleyan scored an unearned run for the 6-5 victory in thirteen innings.

Senior infielder Sean McSheffery (Woodridge, IL/Downers Grove North) and junior infielder Dave Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.) led the Crusaders at the plate.  McSheffery had 3 hits and scored a run, and Rettinger went 2-6, including his second home run, and added 2 RBI and 2 runs.  Freshman catcher Delano Ponce (Albuquerque, NM/Albuquerque Academy) also had 2 hits and drove in a run.

Senior Joe Zimmermann (Woodstock, MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy) got the start for UD and junior Philip Carkhuff pitched the final four and a third innings for Dallas.  He scattered 3 hits and struck out 4 before the walk off unearned run.

The Dallas baseball team has a week off before returning to their home field for a doubleheader against East Texas Baptist University on Tuesday, April 6.  The first game of the doubleheader starts at 12:00pm.
