UD Baseball Loses to LeTourneau in Nine Inning Game

The University of Dallas baseball team lost their game today against the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets by the score of 14-5.  The teams square off again tomorrow for a double header starting at noon to decide the series.

Sophomore starter Michael Schweiss (Parker, CO/Chaparral H.S.) pitched five innings and into the sixth in picking up the loss before freshman pitcher Chase Cooper (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) replaced him.  Cooper pitched partway through the seventh inning until being relieved by sophomore Michael Morrison (Dallas, TX/Lake Hill Prep) who finished the game. Schweiss had seven strikeouts allowing 8 hits while Morrison allowed 3 hits and only 1 run in two and a third.

In the first inning, UD held the Yellow Jackets scoreless before they scored 2 in the second followed by Dallas' 2 runs, and after the fourth inning the teams were tied 2-2. Dallas' runs were scored by sophomore catcher Varea Costello (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) who was drove in by freshman outfielder Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.). Caluda scored the second run on junior infielder/pitcher Martin Lopez' RBI groundout. Unfortunately LeTourneau scored 11 runs over the next three innings while Dallas only scored one by freshman outfielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian). Farris came home on Morrison's RBI double. Dallas gave up only one run in the eighth inning while bringing in 2 more runs. The last two runs were scored by Nico Caluda and senior infielder Sean McSheffery (Woodridge, IL/Downers Grove North).  Freshman infielder Trevor Allred (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) drove in Caluda on a hard hit single and McSheffery scored on a wild pitch.  Caluda, Morrison, junior infielder Martin Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.), and Allred each had an RBI in the game, while Morrison, Costello, and sophomore infielder/outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) all hit doubles and Caluda added a triple. In the hit count, Dallas only trailed LeTourneau by two, putting up 14 to their 16.

The baseball team is back at it tomorrow for doubleheader at home against the familiar Yellow Jackets of LeTourneau University. They travel to San Antonio, TX on Sunday, March 14 to take on Cardinal Stritch University in a nine inning game.  The doubleheader in Irving against LeTourneau starts at 12:00pm and the neutral game against Cardinal Stritch the following day starts at 3:00pm.
