Dallas Baseball Loses to Wabash, Defeats Eureka

The University of Dallas baseball team split their games today against the Wabash College Little Giants and the Eureka College Red Devils.  In their first game, Dallas was upended by a hard hitting Wabash squad 18-8, but was victorious over the Red Devils of Eureka 6-3.

Junior starter Austin Cooper (Afton, OK/Afton H.S.) picked up the loss and lasted four innings before freshman pitcher Andrew Laux (Keller, TX/Keller H.S.) replaced him.  Infielder Martin Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) went 2-4 at the plate, scored a run and drove in 2 in the loss, and junior infield Dave Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.) and freshman infielder Trevor Allred (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) drove in 2 runs each.

In the win over Eureka, UD jumped out to the early lead by plating a run in the first and two in the second before the Red Devils got on the board with a run in the fourth inning.  After playing scoreless ball for nearly three innings, Dallas scored two in the seventh and one in the eight for the much needed insurance runs.  Thankfully the Crusaders did because Eureka struck for two runs in the top of the ninth but UD had the 6-3 lead as the inning, and the game ended.  Senior Joe Zimmermann had another brilliant start today scattering 6 hits and allowing 1 run in seven innings.  Prior to being relieved by Martin Lopez in the top of the eight, Zimmermann recorded 8 strikeouts.  In 2 starts (4 appearances) spanning 13 innings, Zimmermann has a miniscule .69 ERA, 11 strikeouts, and a 2-1 record.  Trevor Allred and Dave Rettinger led the team with 2 RBI, and Martin Lopez, senior infielder Sean McSheffery (Woodridge, IL/Downers Grove North), freshman outfielder Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.), and Dave Rettinger all added 2 hits.  Out of the 11 UD hits, 5 went for extra bases led by Nico Caluda's double and triple.  He also drove in a run and scored twice.  Dave Rettinger, sophomore infielder/outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.), and freshman designated hitter Chase Cooper (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) all added doubles.

The baseball team is back at it tomorrow for a home game against the LeTourneau University Yellow Jackets.  The nine inning game starts at 2:00pm.  UD then has two more home games against LeTourneau on Saturday, March 13 before heading to San Antonio, TX to take on Cardinal Stritch University in a nine inning game on Sunday, March 14.  The doubleheader on Saturday in Irving against LeTourneau starts at 12:00pm and the neutral game against Cardinal Stritch the following day starts at 3:00pm.
