Crusaders Put a Leash On Bulldogs

The Dallas men's baseball shutout the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs in the final game of the series Sunday afternoon 6-0 to wrap up the weekend with much needed momentum. Senior starting pitcher Joe Zimmerman (Woodstock, MD/Chapelgate Christian) pitched five strong innings allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks to receive his first win of the season. Sophomore pitcher Michael Byers (Front Royal, VA/Seton Home School) picked up where Zimmerman left off working four shutout and hitless innings to seal the win and receive his second save in as many days.

Offensively, three Crusaders had multi-hit games, with junior third baseman David Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.) and sophomore infielder/outfielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) each stroking 3. Shelburne also lead the team in RBIs and stolen bases knocking in 3 runs and robbing 2 bags, while adding 2 doubles. Rettinger led in runs with 2, and provided the big hit with a triple.

With the win the Crusaders took 2 of 3 in the weekend series against the Bulldogs and move to 3-9 on the year. UD looks to build off the series and hopes to gather more steam against Eureka College next week. The series will feature two, seven innings games beginning at noon Monday, March 8th.
