UD Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Texas Lutheran University

After losing 10-4 in the opening game of their series against Texas Lutheran University, the UD baseball team bounced back to win their second game of the day by a score of 7-4.

In the first game of the day's doubleheader, Dallas faced starting pitcher Brad Orosey, a sophomore who was named a preseason First Team All-American by D3baseball.com. Orosey earned the win by holding Dallas hitless for the four innings he pitched while striking out four and walking one.

Dallas starter and junior Austin Cooper (Afton, OK/Afton H.S.) struggled against the TLU hitters, surrendering 6 earned runs in 6 innings on 13 hits and 3 walks. A high point for Cooper was his 7 strikeouts in 6 innings.

Sophomore first baseman Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, RI/Portsmouth H.S.) scored twice, while freshman leftfielder Nico Caluda (New Orleans, LA/Jesuit H.S.) and freshman designated hitter Chase Cooper (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) scored the other two of Dallas' runs. Junior third baseman Martin Lopez (Albuquerque, NM/St. Pius X H.S.) knocked in two runs with his only hit of the game. Sophomore centerfielder Devin Arnold (McKinney, TX/McKinney H.S.) and Chase Cooper collected UD's other two hits.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Dallas prevailed in a hard-fought 9 inning battle. Sophomore starter Michael Schweiss (Parker, CO/Chaparral H.S.) earned his first win of the season by delivering 6 good innings of work for UD, giving up three runs on six hits. While Schweiss notched only two strikeouts in the game, he allowed his defense to make plays by causing the tough TLU batters to groundout ten times.

After Schweiss was pulled in the seventh inning, sophomore pitcher Michael Byers (Front Royal, VA/Seton Home School) entered the game. Last weekend, Byers pitched very well as an emergency starter for Schweiss. Today Byers pitched well in relief of Schweiss, giving up just two hits and one earned run in three innings of work while striking out two batters.

UD knocked TLU starter Jeremiah Steinart hard, forcing him from the game in the fifth inning after he had faced three batters without getting an out. Leading the offensive attack for Dallas were freshmen Adam Farris (Flower Mound, TX/Liberty Christian) and Trevor Allred (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.), who each collected a hit, knocked in two runs, and scored twice. Junior David Rettinger (San Antonio, TX/Central Catholic H.S.) played well going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Sophomore catcher Varea Costello (Anchorage, AK/South Anchorage H.S.) went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored. Senior first basemen Martin Lopez collected a hit, an RBI and scored a run as well.

UD takes on TLU one last time this weekend in 9 inning game. The series finale starts at 1:00pm.
