Elkins was a star athlete in four sports at the University of Dallas in the 1920’s. Statistics and records from that era are sparse but we do know he scored six touchdowns on the 1925 football team that had a 7-2-1 record and led the basketball team to a 10-7 record and baseball to a 19-6 record while winning track meets single handedly. The baseball and basketball team winning percentages lasted as school records until 2001. In 1927 he won the United States Amateur Athletic Union Decathlon Championship. He also went on to play two years in the National Football League. Sports Illustrated, in the 1990’s ran a series of articles on the greatest athletes of the 1920’s and Fait Elkins was one of those. In the article about Elkins he was described as “one of the greatest athletes ever seen in this country.”
