University of Dallas Headlines Five Programs Earning SCAC Team Sportsmanship Awards

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference fall sports programs were recognized by the league as recipients of the SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Team Sportsmanship award in balloting conducted following each sport's respective season.

The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The fall awards are presented in men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer and volleyball.

Four of the five programs receiving recognition this fall are first-time Team Sportsmanship honorees, with just the University of Dallas women’s cross country program earning the distinction for the second time in program history.

In cross country, the University of St. Thomas Celts were the top choice on the men’s side with Colorado College and the University of Dallas finishing second and third, respectively. For the women, UD earned top honors for the second time in the last three years, followed by Colorado College (last year’s honoree) and Schreiner University. This year marks just the second time in the history of the award that one institution has not swept both men’s and women’s recognition of the honor.

In men’s soccer, Colorado College took top sportsmanship honors, followed closely by Schreiner University (last year’s winner) and Texas Lutheran University, who finished in a tie for second.

In women’s soccer, the University of Dallas earned its first ever SAAC team sportsmanship award, followed by Southwestern University in second, who had received the honor each of the last two seasons. The University of St. Thomas finished third in this year’s balloting.

And in the sport of volleyball, University of Dallas received top honors with Trinity, last year’s honoree, coming in second. Colorado College followed closely in third.
