5 Crusaders Named as SCAC Announces 2017 Fall All-Sportsmanship Teams
LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) today announced its 10th annual fall All-Sportsmanship teams. A total of 37 student-athletes were selected to the 2017 squad in the sports of men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball.
The SCAC places a special emphasis on sportsmanship each year and is asking all fans of the conference to exhibit good sportsmanship at all conference functions throughout the 2017-18 season. Read the SCAC Presidents’ Council statement on Fan Sportsmanship.
Each head coach was asked to elect one member from his or her team who displayed good sportsmanship throughout the season.
The University of Dallas had five players from each of its fall teams listed. Luke Schwarz (men’s soccer, Mackenzie Vasile (women’s soccer), Mary Scholz (volleyball), Andrew Maal (men’s cross country), and Ana Wilhelm (women’s cross country) formed the quintet.
Schwarz was voted MVP for the men’s soccer team consecutive years, as the senior captain’s leadership was instrumental to a remarkable campaign that resulted in the program’s best 10-2-2 SCAC performance. This memorable season also included the programs first tournament win and championship appearance in the SCAC. He started in all 18 matches he appeared in and had a key PK during a 1-1 tie against Austin College.
Vasile played in 17 matches and made 16 starts for the women’s soccer team. She tied a personal-most three goals and added an assist to give her a career-high seven points. The senior performed well both on and off the field as she earned United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-Academic Team.
Scholz was another player voted MVP. She tallied a team-high 278 kills and added 320 digs, as she posted 15 double-doubles on the year. The senior ranked top-five in the SCAC for kills and kills-per-set throughout most of the fall. Her career total 713 kills sits 14th all-time in the program for the three-year letter winner.
Maal and Wilhelm each represented the Crusaders well on and off the trails. Maal emerged as a leader on a squad that was dominated by roster with six freshmen, and him one of the few returners and only a sophomore himself. Wilhelm was another second-year runner that was relied upon for leadership. She excelled in the classroom by also qualifying for the USCAA National All-Academic Team.
