Six Athletes among those listed for 2015 Convocation Awards

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas celebrated four years of hard work for the soon-to-be Class of 2015 during the 2015 Convocation ceremony on Thursday.

Six recipients for Dallas were athletes able to net departmental awards. This included: men’s cross country runner Aaron French, women’s soccer defender Kayla Nguyen, volleyball setter C.J. Broadbent, women’s cross country Crystal Purcell, men’s lacrosse midfielder Charles Shaughnessy, and men’s soccer defender James Bernard.  

French, a native of Siren, Wisconsin, earned the American Chemical Society Dallas/Fort Worth Section Student Scholarship Award for Chemistry. Shaughnessy, a native of Cimarron, Kansas, was one of two named for the Robert A. Welch Undergraduate Chemistry Award.  

Broadbent, a native of Goodyear, Arizona, was among a group of seven awarded the Comprehensive Exams with Distinction in Biology. Also claiming the honor in the same department was Purcell, a Pagosa Springs, Colorado, native.

One of two students to take the Outstanding Student Achievement Award in Economics was Bernard; a native of Sugar Land, Texas.

Rounding out the student-athletes was Nguyen with Politics Comps and Distinction in the Politics department. The native of Olathe, Kansas, adds to her impressive scholarly accolades. Nguyen was named the 2015 Scholar Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award at the Athletic Banquet last Sunday.

Graduating seniors will receive their degrees Sunday, May 17.
