Southwestern pulls away from Men's Lacrosse after tight first quarter

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas men's lacrosse team (5-8) were unable to contain a tough Southwestern University (5-8) offense on Saturday afternoon. Dallas fell 17-3 and have dropped its past three-straight. The Pirates ended a five-game slide.

It was a tight contest in the first quarter as UD claimed a 1-0 advantage from Junior Matthew Cyr's (St. Louis, Mo.) goal. It increased the team-leader's total on the campaign to 38.

After four consecutive goals, Cyr would take advantage of being a man up on a power play, and scored his second of three netters for the Navy and White. The attacker notched the hat trick with 2:18 remaining in regulation.

A seven-goal fourth was plenty to help push a comfortable margin for the Black and Gold on the scoreboard. SU matched its scoring output in the second quarter to carry an 8-2 lead into intermission.

Senior Cody Wooten (Aurora, Colo.) added a point for Dallas, as he connected on a pass to Cyr in the second scoring sequence for his team-high, sixth assist. Junior Alex Ziolkowski (Ann Arbor, Mich.) picked up eight of the visitor's 31 groundballs.

Sophomore Holden Berg (Auburn, Ga.) and Cyr each collected five. Cyr, Ziolkowski, and Wooten, the team's top three scorers, performed with three shots apiece to combine for nine of 10 in the effort. Berg tallied the other attempt.

The Pirates compiled 61 shots and placed 36 on cage. Matt Amerie led with five netters, Everett Barger was right behind with four, and Dakota Butler placed three in the back of the net. Berger and Amerie tabbed double-digit shooting efforts with 13 and 11, respectively.

SU picked up 58 groundballs as a team.

Charlie Fisher got the win in between the pipes for the home team, working 40:29 minutes. Evan Carlson finished the final 19:31, and the duo each stopped two saves to combine with four.

Junior Ryan Murphy (Yorba Linda, Calif.) went the full 60 minutes, and saved 19 against 36. Murphy has nabbed this save count mark in a quartet of contests this season, all on the road.
