Baseball Takes Two from Lyon to Open Series

February 24, 2024

BATESVILLE, Ar. - The University of Dallas baseball team won both games of their double header against Lyon College on Saturday, improving to 5-1 on the season.

Game 1

Dallas 3, Lyon 0 (7 Innings)

WP: Adrian Montenegro (3-0)

LP: Adyen Heitmann (0-1)

Dallas once again found themselves embroiled in a pitcher's duel, and once again Adrian Montenegro and the Crusaders came out on top.

Montenegro dazzled on the mound, tossing seven innings of shutout ball while allowing just four hits and striking out 10.  He has been nigh untouchable in his first three outings of the season, now with an ERA of 0.42, WHIP of 0.55, and 26 strikeouts in 21.2 innings pitched.

The Crusaders' bats didn't set the world ablaze, but did enough to get the win with Montenegro's performance behind them.

Dallas played some small ball to drive in their first run in the third, then plated two more in the fifth with base knocks by Luke Gill, Tyler Darnell, and Simon TurnerFernando Davila was the only Crusader to have multiple hits on the day, going 3-for-3 at the plate.

Game 2

Dallas 6, Lyon 4 (7 Innings)

WP: Collin Johnson (1-0)

LP: Cameron Gordon (0-1)

The Crusaders wasted no time in getting on the board in game two, taking advantage of a pair of errors to bring home two runs in the top of the first.

Lyon threatened in the third with a leadoff double, but couldn't move the runner at all as they left two runners on base in the inning.

Dallas had a runner on third with one out in the top of the fifth, but a botched bunt attempt and a fielder's choice ended the threat as quickly as it began.  Instead, the Scots took advantage of some sloppy play by Dallas to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning.  Lyon came up with the timely hits, but were helped along by an error and a wild pitch that saw them plate three runs to take a 3-2 lead.

The Crusaders answered right back in the top of the sixth, driving in three runs on two hits to reclaim the lead at 5-3.  They added an insurance run in the top of the seventh and staved off a late rally by Lyon to win 6-4.

Caleb Hohman was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.

Collin Johnson went the distance, tossing seven innings and allowing just two earned runs with 10 strikeouts.

The series will conclude tomorrow with a nine-inning game at 1:00 pm.
