Women's Soccer plays Austin College to a Draw on Sunday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's soccer team (2-9-1, 1-4-1 SCAC) finished in a draw on Sunday versus Austin College (2-7-1, 1-4-1 SCAC). The Lady Crusaders move to 0-1-1 in overtime matches this season.

It was a scoreless game at halftime, with neither team able to mount a lot of momentum offensively at that point. UD held a 3-2 edge in shot attempts in the opening stanza.

Dallas would get on the board in the 78th minute as freshman Kathryn Zepeda (Lynnwood, Wash.) netted her second goal of the campaign. Zepeda knocked a corner kick into the upper right corner to put the home squad in front 1-0.

A few minutes later, the Roos challenged sophomore Elena Naccari (Covington, La.) with back-to-back shots deep in the penalty box, but the goalie made a pair of saves before a UD defender cleared the trouble out of the box in front of an open net.

Austin College would find the equalizer at the 84:08 minute mark, however, as Hannah Poenisch blasted a successful penalty kick to knot the match. Dallas was charged with 16 fouls compared to four on the Maroon and Gold.

From then, the Lady Crusaders forced a corner kick by Zepeda about a minute later, and AC would launch a final shot attempt in the closing seconds of regulation. Naccari denied Ashley Rice on the right side edge to preserve the tie.

Neither team would find an answer in both overtimes, but the Lady Crusaders forced a few favorable opportunities with six shots compared to two by Austin College. This included four in the second overtime.

Laura McGee (2-7-2) made four saves in the extra time, and the team also had a key save in the first overtime as sophomore Sydney Stirling (McLean, Va.) was blocked on an effort for the golden goal.

Naccari (2-9-2) also played a complete 110:00 minutes between the posts for Dallas, while making four saves.

In the game, UD posted a 12-10 advantage in shots versus its opponent. The two teams matched corner kicks with six apiece.

Leading the Navy and White in shots was senior Mariah Fairbanks (Rocklin, Calif.) with three. Two players rounded out the group with multi-shot efforts in junior Cascade Mayer (Kapaa, Hawaii) and freshman Samantha Deitschel (San Antonio, Texas).

Sophomore Alexa Acquista (Las Vegas, Nev.), Zepeda, Mayer, Stirling, and Deitschel all landed shots on goal in the tie outcome.

Annessa Tomblin notched three shot attempts with two on target to pace the Roos. Erin Eckart and Poenisch each had a pair of shots on the day.
