Women's Lacrosse falls on Sunday at College of Mount Saint Vincent
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The University of Dallas women's lacrosse team scored a season-high eight goals, but could not overcome an early deficit to College of Mount Saint Vincent in a 14-8 result on Sunday.
The Dolphins produced a 3-0 advantage behind two quick scores in the first three minutes. Caitlin Elia put in the second goal of that sequence on a free position shot, and then netted another about eight minutes later on an assist from Emma Dell'Aquila.
Christian Flynn (Seattle, Wash.) put Dallas on the board at 17:07 to make it 3-1. Two more goals – including the third of that half by Elia – stretched the lead to four. UD countered with consecutive goals by Avery Finch (Jamul, Calif.) and Lexi Leite (Houston, Texas). Finch's second goal of the season was helped by Sarah Gamble (Allen, Texas), who had the lone assist for the visitors. It was also the first collegiate point for the junior, who is a two-year member of the soccer program.
Leite ended up with a team-high three goals, and has claimed at least that amount in the last trio of matches. She fired 10 shots with nine shots on cage to go with five draw controls and three groundballs.
Her second goal of the day cut the score to 7-4, but a late netter as time neared expiring by Meg Merrell increased the margin back to four at intermission.
Erika Keever (Fort Worth, Texas) struck for her only two goals in the opening moments of the next half to reduce the deficit in half. CMSV answered back with another two goals, and then Leite secured her hat trick on her second man-up goal of the match at 18:07.
From there, the Dolphins tallied four of the five remaining scoring plays to put the match out of reach. Camryn Dougherty (Drayden, Md.) notched her first career goal for UD during that final stretch.
Shot attempts were nearly even with CMSV narrowly owning a 36-34 edge. Teams were even at 21 in the first half. The Crusaders did put more shots on goals 25-24, but Allyson Weakliem snagged 17 saves in goal. Lizz Winkler (St. Charles, Ill.) made 10 stops for UD.
The Dolphins led by nine in groundballs (36-27) and were 8-for-10 in clears both halves compared to UD being 10-of-16. Dallas did improve at 7-of-9 in the last 30 minutes. Leite and Alex Parkey (Henrietta, Texas) matched the team-lead for draw controls with five apiece, and led UD to a 13-11 advantage overall.
Elia finished with a game-high five goals, while posting 10 shots and 11 groundballs. Merrell contributed four goals as the two were responsible for most of CMSV's offense.

Dallas returns to action in two weekends at Westminster College. On March 30th, the Crusaders will play Carroll University (WI) in a neutral site match. The month closes with a matchup against the host team. Both start times are scheduled at 4 p.m.
