Crusaders Drop Season Finale at Trinity University
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Trinity University 94-60 on Saturday evening. The Crusaders (2-23, 1-15 SCAC) shot 76.9 percent (10-13) from the free throw line, but Trinity (21-4, 14-2) forced 25 turnovers. The Tigers went on to score 30 points off of these turnovers. TU also won the battle in the paint scoring 44 points in that area.
Trinity started the game scoring eight straight points. Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) and Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) each made some buckets as UD climbed back (12-6). Diaz kept Dallas in it as she scored eight points in the quarter, but Trinity pushed its lead to 34-10 after one period.
The Tigers went on a 7-3 run to begin the second frame. Williams buried the three-pointer for Dallas. Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) hit a trey late in the quarter, but TU finished the quarter on a 10-0 run to secure a 58-23 halftime lead.
Dallas outscored Trinity 24-22 in the third period. Both teams exchanged points through the whole period. At the 3:06 mark Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) and Starnes found a 5-0 for UD, but were unable to cut into the Trinity lead much. It was an 80-47 TU lead heading into the final quarter.
Trinity won the fourth quarter 14-13. Starnes and Oliveti both combined for ten points in that frame. At the final horn Trinity would go onto to become Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) regular season champions.
Trinity shot 38-69 (55.1 percent) from the field and 10-19 (52.6 percent) from three-point range. TU won the rebound battle 38-31. Rachel Chavez had a game-high 22 points to lead TU. The Tigers also were led by Jackie Layng and Abby Holland who each had 20 and 19 points, respectively. Layng shot 4-5 from behind the arc.
Diaz led the Crusaders with 19 points and 10 rebounds to complete the double-double. Oliveti had 14 points and seven boards. Starnes finished with 13 points with a 3-6 mark from three-point range. Williams added eight points.
