Crusaders Drop Home Finale to Schreiner University
IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Schreiner University 68-45 on Saturday. The Mountaineers (5-18, 5-9 SCAC) used an 18-4 first quarter lead to set the tone. Dallas (2-21, 1-13 SCAC) did not give up at this point, as they scored 17 points in the second and third period to stay close. The Mountaineers took advantage of 20 UD turnovers and converting 22 points off of these mishaps to find the win.
SU made three-straight buckets to open up the game. Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) got the Crusaders on the board with a lay-in. At the 5:03 mark the Mountaineers went on a 9-0 run to go up 15-2. Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) got the other two points for UD in the first period with 52 seconds remaining. Miranda Vallejo sent SU to the second period up 18-4 with a made three-pointer.
SU went up 23-6 two and a half minutes into the second frame. Gracie Williams (Midwest City, Okla.) found her touch with five straight points. Josline Hernandez then capped off two straight made buckets to help SU stay ahead 27-11. Jordyn Buell (Murrieta, Calif.) nailed her first career-three-pointer with four minutes to go. Both teams traded buckets to end the frame, as SU had a 33-21 halftime lead.
Sydney Williams started the second half with a layup for Schreiner. Olivia Severson (La Crosse, Wis.) then joined the three-point party with a trey of her own as UD found a 4-0 run. At the 4:39 part of the third period, Williams hit another trey to keep UD within 12 points (46-34). SU then found momentum with a 10-2 run. Severson buried two free throws with time winding down, but the Mountaineers eventually took a 20 point lead into the fourth.
Williams started the final period with a bucket from behind the arc. Yasmine Arogunjo found her touch scoring six points in an eight nothing run for the Mountaineers. Dallas was unable to swing momentum to its side in the final quarter, as SU secured its fifth conference win.
Arogunjo led all scorers with 17 points. Sydney Williams and Miranda Vallejo followed behind their teammate with 16 and 14 points, respectively. Gabby Ivarra came down with 10 rebounds to lead SU.
Williams finished with a career-high 16 points. Oliveti joined her with 16 points and seven rebounds. Severson added five points, a season-best seven assists, and seven rebounds. Buell contributed four points and four boards. Dallas outrebounded Screiner 42-37

Dallas will finish the season with two road games. First on the trip the Crusaders will travel to Schreiner University for a rematch against the Mountaineers on Friday (Feb. 15). First tip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
