Women's Basketball drops Hard-Fought Game to No. 20 Trinity

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas women's basketball team was tied with No. 20 Trinity University after three quarters on Friday night. The nationally ranked opponent pulled away in the middle of the last 10 minutes to secure a 60-53 final.

After being held to a pair of points through halftime, Michelle DeCoud (Monument, Colo.) erupted for 21 points in the second half, including 12 to lead Dallas to a 21-12 third quarter. She helped the Crusaders start with a lead in the fourth, but seven unanswered points gave Trinity enough of a boost.

Dallas falls to 8-15 overall and 2-10 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), while the Tigers improved to 17-3 and 10-1 in league games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams experienced poor shooting in the first 10 minutes. Dallas netted the first four points but finished 2-for-15 in the frame. The road team endured a long scoring drought with the first eight field goals missed until a point was etched. Emily Daniel hit the back-end of two free throws to get Trinity on the board seven and a half minutes into action.

The Tigers ended the quarter well with 10 points to go up by six at the first buzzer. An 18-15 second quarter kept the visitors on top 28-19 at halftime.

UD turned the momentum in the third quarter. A 12-2 run started by Madilyne Borjon (San Antonio, Texas) the last five minutes allowed the home squad to go up in the final seconds of the frame. DeCoud dropped half of the points, while also contributing some assists, steals, and rebounds to ignite the Crusaders. Dallas held a 12-6 lead for points in the paint, 7-2 lead in points off turnovers, and 3-0 in second chance points.

Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) hit a free throw for the go-ahead point at the time, 37-36, with a minute remaining. Trinity scored was able to even the gap with four points in the final six ticks that sent it to the fourth tied at 40.

DeCoud had two points at the charity stripe 30 seconds in, but Trinity's Abby Holland collected an offensive rebound and was fouled on the layup she made. The and-one gave the Tigers a lead that would not be squandered the rest of the way. A 7-0 lead sparked TU up 47-42 over three minutes in. A jumper by Daniel at 2:38 pushed the edge to 55-45.

Trinity benefited from a 13-2 edge in points off turnovers in the fourth.

STATISTICAL NOTABLES

DeCoud led all scorers with 23 points and notched her ninth double-double by hauling in 12 boards. She garnered five steals, two assists, and a block to give her 130 for her program record. Celsi Caraway (Arlington, Texas) delivered 14 points off the bench 11 by halftime (9 in 2nd quarter). Helen Onyenso (Oak Park, Ill.) hustled for eight rebounds (five on the offensive glass).

Dallas was outshot 38.3 percent to 33.3 percent. Dallas made five 3-pointers, while the Tigers only had a 2-for-17 showing. Both sides made 12 free throws. The Crusaders edged Trinity 47-30 in rebounds. But, the Tigers led 18-0 on fastbreaks, 28-16 on points from miscues, and 32-22 on points in the paint.

Trinity snagged 14 steals that were part of UD being forced into 28 turnovers. Abby Holland led the team with 16 points and six rebounds. Daniel tossed in 15 off the bench and added four steals. Annie Wise swiped three. TU's bench scored 35.

- DeCoud now has 1,295 points for her career.

- Onyenso has equaled her offensive rebounds and defensive rebounds 145occasions this year. Eight of the contests have resulted in offensive boards being greater than defensive, including four-of-five.
