UD Softball Goes 0-2 on Saturday for Millsaps Tournmament

JACKSON, Miss. - The University of Dallas softball team fell twice on Saturday in day two of the Millsaps Tournament 2020. After a one-run victory to open the weekend, the Crusaders dropped a game determined by a single-run to Mississippi University for Women in a neutral site outing.

Dallas faltered in the nightcap to the Majors, allowing six runs over the fifth and sixth innings combined to drop the rematch from Friday.

All the scoring was done in the third inning, as both sides registered five hits and two errors. The Owls etched four hits, including back-to-back singles up the middle and to center field, respectively, by Austyn Holde and Megan Cummin for an RBI each. Megan James followed with the third straight RBI on a sacrifice fly, which was the deciding run in the end. Four of MUW's hits occurred in the third.

Dallas answered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning, Mackenzie Tano (Wylie, Texas) reached on an error that plated Kerstyn McLain (Splendora, Texas) and Madison Coutts (Tampa, Fla.). That was all the offense UD could muster for the game. McLain did reach second in the seventh with two outs. The Crusaders got the final at bat this game with being the home team, but the short stop was left on second as a ground out ended the game. The top four batters in the lineup notched a hit and Coutts reached via a walk twice. Hale delivered the other hit in this game.

Emily Martin (San Jose, Calif.) tossed her longest outing of the season by going the distance and just having that one blemished frame. Otherwise, the senior pitcher was solid and allowed three runs on five hits with a walk.

Kaitlyn Parris picked up the victory with 4.1 innings pitched in the circle. She gave up all five hits but avoided major mistakes to get to the fifth with just two unearned runs charged. She joined Amelia Stalter in strikeouts as the duo combined for six. Stalter did not allow a run, hit, or walk in the save.

The Crusaders got on top early with an Annabel Anderson (Midlothian, Texas) RBI-double to score Kerstyn McLain in the first. An RBI walk by Karina Campo (Georgetown, Texas) lifted UD up 2-0.

The Majors tied the game with a two-run third inning, as Jordan Lipari doubled and Ty Bergeron singled runs home to tie the game. The Crusaders broke that deadlock with Anderson reaching on an error to score Coutts. Liz Cordova (Okla.) put down a single to push Dallas up 4-2.

Katelyn Norse doubled home the tying and go-ahead runs in the fifth. Karlie Galloway added a single to center to make it a 6-4 edge.

Anderson got a run back with a homer. Millsaps sealed the win with two sixth inning runs. The Crusaders defense ended up being charged four errors. The Majors only had one miscue.

Anderson belted her second career home run and finished with three RBI and, while Cordova posted three hits. Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) was saddled with the loss after allowing six runs (1 earned) in two innings of relief. Campo got the start and went four innings, as she fanned two batters and gave up two runs on four hits to go with a walk. Millsaps had eight players listed in lineup card showing eight have reached bases via a hit. UD allowed three doubles.

Lipan, Norse, and Brooklyn Wascom all had doubles for MC's hits for extra bases. Lipari, Lindsey Osbon, and Bergeron garnered the multi-hit games in the 2,3, and 4 spots of the lineup card. The first three hitters: Norris, Lipari and Osbon scored multiple runs to be the top-leaders of that category. Amber Funderburk went seven innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits. She walked five and struck out seven.
