Softball unable to Contain Southwestern
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team fell in Friday night's series-opening doubleheader versus Southwestern University. Despite holding two 1-0 leads in each game, the Crusaders could not contain the Southwestern offense.
An eight-run fourth inning allowed the visiting Pirates to win game one in five innings by double-digits.
Game two was a low-scoring contest the first four innings. Dallas had taken advantage of an error in the outfield to go ahead 1-0 in the second. The opposition was held to two hits through the first four innings, but Southwestern claimed the lead with three runs in the fifth, and then broke the game open with six the last inning to win by a run-rule.

Alicia Enciso (Corona, Calif.) doubled to lead off the first inning. A couple batters later, Gabbie Underwood (La Verne, Calif.) grounded out to short and scored Enciso to give UD the early edge.
Enciso would finish 2-for-2 with a walk to go perfect at the plate. The leadoff hitter contributed the team's other RBI in the fourth.
By then the Pirates had countered with 11 runs to go up by as many as 10 runs before Enciso ripped a two-bagger down the left field line to score Lauren Galvan (Byran, Texas).
Southwestern went up for good thanks to a two-RBI single by Andrea Hern in the top of the second. After a run was added in the third, the Pirates extended the margin with eight runs in the top of the fourth.
All eight runs occurred with two outs, as the visitors pounded nine hits, including four doubles (three in a row). The last three combined for a quartet of ribbies.
Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) got saddled with the loss, but only was charged four earned runs. She allowed 13 hits.
Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.), Julie Duenas (Houston, Texas), Haley Golden (Lake Dallas, Texas), Mackenzie Tano (Wylie, Texas), and Galvan etched the remaining UD hits to give it seven.
Nine different players for Southwestern registered a base knock, with five tallying multiple ones. Taylor Curtis was perfect (3-3) with an RBI and two runs scored. Grace Phelps and Hern drove in three apiece.
Lindsey Longuet earned the win in the circle. She allowed two runs on seven hits in four innings to go with a walk and three strikeouts.

The Crusaders grabbed an early lead for the second time that night. Underwood hustled for a double to start the second the inning. Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) singled up the middle. A mishandle by the center fielder allowed Underwood to advance home and Cordova to reach third. However, Dallas could not capitalize the rest of that inning and were held to a hit through the remaining 12 outs.
Galvan hurled four scoreless innings before an error led to trouble in the fifth. During her scoreless stretch, the sophomore faced 15 batters. She pitched around a walk in the first and singles in the third and fourth. Those Pirates that recorded hits did reach second, but were stranded.
With an out in the fifth, Mary Alex Krosby reached on an error and made it to third. After a pop out was caught for the second out, Sydney Scott doubled to center to knot the score. Celeste Silvas bunted for a single and stole second. Phelps brought in both with a double in the right center gap.
Southwestern extended the lead with six runs on six hits in the sixth inning to complete the final score.
Stevenson would notch the other base hit for UD. Tano walked to give the team its other baserunner. Galvan threw all six innings in the setback. Her final line was: 11 hits, nine runs (6 earned), two walks, and no strikeouts.
Meyer started for the Pirates and tossed all six innings to earn the win. She fanned five in addition to her three hits, run (unearned), and walk allowed.
Scott went 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and a stolen base to lead the Pirates. Phelps doubled for both her hits.
