Softball swept at Schreiner University

KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team was defeated in a doubleheader at Schreiner University on Sunday. The Crusaders posted three runs in both contests, but were unable to hold the opposition's offense.

Game one was concluded after five innings thanks to a seven combined runs in the last two home trips to hit for the Mountaineers. A couple three-run innings put the home team on top early in the second matchup and led to a series sweep.

A pair of runs in the first two innings lifted the Mountaineers to a 4-run lead.

UD struck for all its runs in the fourth, which nipped the deficit to a single run. Katelyn Lazarek (Seattle, Wash.) singled to drive in Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.) and Julie Duenas (Houston, Texas). A passed ball moved Lazarek to third, and Mackenzie Tano (Wylie, Texas) ripped a hit to pull the Crusaders within one.

The four hits in that inning were the only ones all game for the guests.

Schreiner broke the game open in the next half inning with six total runs. Alyssa Maki, who went 4-for-4, blasted a three-run homer to count the first-half of that run amount. Maki also tripled, notched four RBI and scored three runs.

A run in the fifth made it the second run-ruled final this series.

Gabriela Acuna added a 3-for-4, double, RBI, and two runs, while Kaylee Atchley went a perfect 3-for-3. Jessica Vrana threw five innings in the win. Other than the fourth, she was effective in the circle with two walks and a strikeout in addition to her hits and runs allowed.

Lauren Galvan (Bryan, Texas) was saddled with the loss in 1.1 innings. She gave up fur runs on six hits. Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) threw the remaining 3.1 innings, and gave up 10 hits.

Dallas took its first lead of the series in the top inning to start game two. Gabbie Underwood singled home Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.) to draw the early edge.

In the bottom half of the frame, triples by Maki and Acuna flipped the lead back to the Mountaineers. Samantha Cordon added an RBI to round out the three-run inning.

Another trio of runs extended the advantage for SU in the third. Atchley clobbered a long ball for two runs, and then Alyssa Hernandez singled home the other run later.

Dallas pushed across a run in the fourth and seventh, but were unable to close the gap any further. Overall the team tallied six hits from just as many individuals. Tano and Alicia Enciso (Corona, Calif.) recorded an RBI-hit during those two later run scoring plays. Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.) and Tera Espinosa (Caldwell, Texas) scored a run.

Galvan threw six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits. Watts gave up the other three runs.

Schreiner amassed 12 hits, with four extra-base ones. Vasquez, Maki, Acuna, and Cordon formed a top quartet in the lineup with two-hit performances. The group combined for five runs scored. Courtney Bigley and Atchley stretched the lineup to the top six spots overall with at least a run-batted-in.

Amanda Timmer won for the second time this series. She logged four innings and yielded two runs on four hits to go with two walks and three punchouts. Hannah Ortiz earned the save by going the last three frames. She held UD to a run on two hits and struck out one.
