Softball drops Doubleheader at Schreiner
KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team fell in both games to open a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) series at Schreiner University on Saturday.
The Crusaders scored two runs in their final at bat, but were unable to overcome allowing seven runs in the series opener. Dallas produced 10 hits, with a pair of home runs coming off the bats of Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.) and Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.).
Nine runs (eight unearned) in the first inning of game two doomed UD in a five-inning setback.

The Mountaineers got on the board in the second inning with a three-spot. Courtney Bigley and Alyssa Maki singled in runs, and then Maki and Ashton Vasquez pulled off a successful double steal.
Stevenson got the Crusaders within a run in the fourth thanks to her first collegiate home run that scored Gabbie Underwood (La Verne, Calif.).
Schreiner answered with two more runs in the fourth on a homer from Maki.
Cordova then belted a solo blast – her second of the season – in the next half inning to cut the deficit to 5-3.
The difference in the game was a pair of insurance runs that proved crucial in the home sixth. Samantha Cordon ripped a two-RBI hit to stretch the game to 7-3.
Mel Savala (Bryan, Texas) and Underwood produced their second hits of the contest and scored Tera Espinosa (Caldwell, Texas) and Alicia Enciso (Corona, Calif.) in UD's final at bat.
The tandem that drove in the runs were the two Crusaders that each went 2-for-4 to lead the offense. Eight different players recorded a base knock. Enciso doubled and Savala tripled for the extra-base hits. Savala has tripled in each of the last three weekend series.
Lauren Galvan (Bryan, Texas) surrendered seven runs on 12 hits in six innings. She walked one and struck out three.
Hannah Ortiz picked up the win for the Mountaineers. She logged a complete game and yielded five runs on 10 hits. Ortiz fanned nine.
Bigley doubled for SU's other hit for extra bases besides the Maki homer. Maki was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. She was part of a quartet along with Vasquez, Cordon, and Bigley that had multi-hit days.

Schreiner poured nine runs in the first inning and added at least one the next three turns in a shutout over the Crusaders.
Galvan was able to register two outs, but the home team changed the momentum with three straight singles. Mary Buhidar drove in the first run to break the tie on the third base knock in a row. An error allowed two more runs to cross home and extended what would be a long frame for Dallas.
Vasquez, Maki (double), and Cordon all struck run scoring hits during that inning.
Dallas was unable to get anything going, but Cordova did notch a perfect 3-for-3 in the box. Savala posted a hit to extend her streak to 12. Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) logged the other hit. She also threw 3.1 innings of relief for Galvan, who started the second time that afternoon.
Schreiner etched 17 hits and were led by Vasquez, Cordon, and Bigley with three apiece. Maki plated three runs to go with a double and triple.
Amanda Timmer threw 3 innings in the win. She allowed three hits, walked one, and struck out five. Cameron Greaves gave up two hits and a walk in the last two innings to preserve the shutout.
