Big 2nd Inning lifts Softball over Trinity in Game 2; Split the Day
IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas softball team split Saturday's doubleheader with Trinity University to finish the SCAC series.
It was another low-scoring contest in game one, as the Tigers prevailed by three runs to earn the series win. Official game time was only one hour and 15 minutes, as both sides combined for 11 hits.
Dallas sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run, second inning during the final matchup of the Easter Weekend. That frame lifted the home team to a 7-3 victory.

Trinity tallied a run in the first, second, and sixth innings, and were able to blank its opponent in the opener of today's twinbill. Stephanie Crumrine singled to left center to bring home Devon Potter.
In the second inning, Carli Jones grounded out to third, but a bad throw by the first baseman on an attempt back across the diamond aided Sara McCarty in advancing home.
Rebecca Berreth singled to center for the final run of the matchup.
Dallas was held to four hits – all singles – by Trinity's winning pitcher Allie Holbrook. She fanned five batters in the complete game shutout.
Registering the hits for UD were: Alicia Enciso (Corona, Calif.), Mel Savala (Bryan, Texas), Liz Cordova (Oklahoma City, Okla.), and Caitlyn Stevenson (Henderson, Nev.). The top three hitters in the lineup reached on a knock, and Savala and Stevenson were the only players to reach scoring position – once respectively in the first and seventh.
Maggie Watts (Arcadia, La.) was saddled with the loss. In seven innings she allowed two earned runs on seven hits to go with no walks.

The previous eight regular season matchups dating between these programs had resulted in the winning team only scoring three runs. Dallas eclipsed that total in a single inning to capture its first conference win of the spring.
An early 2-0 deficit was erased with six runs in the home part of the second. Trinity struck first in its opening turn to hit with Marisa Trevino singling through the left side to bring home Hailey Wilson. A fly ball scored McCarty for the second run in the top half of the next inning.
Dallas used four hits and took advantage of two errors to help boast its biggest lead of the series. The first fielding miscue came on a throw from third that allowed Haley Golden (Lake Dallas, Texas) to reach. Lauren Galvan (Bryan, Texas) singled to center to tie the game. A pair of obstruction calls at the plate gave UD the lead. Both Golden and Galvan were called safe for the go-ahead runs. Cordova added an RBI, as she grounded out to extend the run total that frame to five. Gabbie Underwood (La Verne, Calif.), who had her nine-game hitting streak snapped the last game, would pick up with an RBI-single through the right side to cap the inning.
Golden singled to right field for her first career run-batted-in, and lifted Dallas in front 7-2.
The Tigers got a run in their last at bat thanks to a double by Gina Monaco, but the Crusaders held on.
Both teams reached double-digits in hits with UD edging 11-10. Both sides left eight runners on base.
Savala, Underwood, and Stevenson all had 2-for-4 showings at the plate. Savala doubled and Stevenson tripled for extra-base hits for the Crusaders. Stevenson did score two runs. Galvan went the distance, yielding three runs (2 earned) on 10 hits and a walk.
Wilson led the Tigers at the plate with a 3-for-4 and two runs scored. Trevino added the other multi-hit game with a 2-for-4. She recorded the other double, and Katherine Weber tripled in her lone at bat off the bench.
Adrienne Edwards took the loss with 1.1 innings in the start. She allowed six runs (2 earned) on four hits and a walk. Sabrina Nieto hurled the last three innings.

Dallas is on the road for the next 10 games, including eight in conference. The first league series of this stretch will be at Schreiner University on April 7th and 8th.
