UD Men's Basketball Defeats Colorado College 72-64 on Saturday

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The University of Dallas men's basketball team beat Colorado College 72-64 on Saturday evening. Dallas (6-5, 2-2 SCAC) got back to .500 in conference play and has now won two straight game since its five-game slide. Jai Love (St. Louis, Mo.) and John Russell (Bossier City, La.) both had season-high points with 15 and 13 points, respectively, to help the Crusaders grab its second win in Colorado in as many days. Dallas used a 41-37 rebound advantage and sharp shooting 26-40 (43.3%) in the winning effort.

Dallas fell behind 5-2 in the first two minutes of the game. Michael Wambsganss (Denver, Colo.) and Jacob Giunta (Keller, Texas) then scored five-straight points to give UD a 7-5 lead. The game was later tied at 10 for 3:07 minutes before the Tigers got a layup from Jackson Tanner. Neither team was able to pull away until UD got a 6-0 from Russell and Cameran Hyde (Missouri City, Texas) at the eight-minute mark to go up 22-16. CC countered with a 7-0 run capped off by a jump shot from Aaron Acosta (23-22). At the 3:02 mark CC was able to pull even once again at 27 after Deante' Dennis converted his jump shot. UD finished the half on a 5-0 run with four of these points coming from Russell as UD took a 32-27 lead into halftime.

Isaiah Hayes (Arlington, Texas) scored the first four points for Dallas in the second half and helped Dallas hold onto a 36-30 lead three minutes into the period. Russell gave Dallas its largest lead (41-33) after his jumper was successful with 13:36 remaining. UD expanded its lead to nine, but CC would not go away. The Tigers eventually got on a rhythm and put together six-straight points to cut the lead to three (45-42). Acosta then cut the lead down to one with six minutes to go. Hyde and Love kept hitting key shots at this points to keep the Crusaders ahead and open up its lead. CC would get back within four points with just three minutes left, but the Dallas defense held tough down the stretch and made key shots to grab the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) victory.

Following the efforts of Love and Russell, Wambsganss notched 13 points, while Hyde had 12. Wambsganns, Mathis, and Ginuta each had two steals on the night. Hyde and Giunta led Dallas with seven rebounds each. Dustin Mathis (Fort Worth, Texas) and Love also dished out four assists a piece.

UD shot 15-20 (75%) from the free throw line and had 40 points from its bench, while scoring 14 points off of 12 CC turnovers on Saturday evening.

Acosta had a game-high 31 points making four three-pointers and shooting 12-23 from the field. Cooxooeii Black added 13 points and 10 rebounds for CC. No other player had more than five points. The Tigers were held to 24-64 (37.5%) from the field and 6-26 (23.1%) from behind the arc. CC gathered 28 of its points inside the paint.
