Pirates edge Men's Basketball in Back-and-Forth Game Friday
GEORGETOWN, Texas – The University of Dallas men's basketball team dropped a 90-81 final at Southwestern University on Friday night. Dallas (7-14, 2-10 SCAC) trailed by one at halftime, but a 22-8 run for about the remaining eight minutes of the second half helped the Pirates (12-11, 7-5 SCAC) secure the win.
NOTABLE STATISTICS

- Prince Giadolor (Rockwall, Texas) and Tom Kaiser (Nashville, Tenn.) produced team-highs with 17 points apiece. Giadolor now has 503 career points in 2nd season.
- Kaiser broke double figures in scoring for 9th time and has achieved in last three-of-four contests. He also raised his top of the conference field goal percentage (71.3) with a 6-for-7 shooting.
- Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) rounded out the trio of double-digit scorers (13 points). He and Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) made three treys. Gonzalez had all nine points from behind the arc.
- Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) picked up team-highs in rebounds (6) and assists (5). He has matched his career most in assists four times this campaign.
- Southwestern was led by Joel Martinez with a game-high 18 points off the bench. Zach Whitlock followed right behind with 17 points and grabbed eight boards.
- Ryan Ogden nearly missed a double-double with nine points and game-high 12 rebounds.

- Dallas shot 50.8 percent from the floor while the Pirates were just below at 49.2 percent. UD made 30 field goals (3rd time in SCAC game). Each team hit eight treys.
- The Crusaders went 13-of-17 (76.5%) shooting at the line compared to 75 percent (18-24) for Southwestern.
- Turnovers were about even at Dallas committing an extra one (15-14). SU scored a 19-11 edge in points from the turnovers.
- The home team produced a lofty difference on the glass 41-27. Southwestern garnered nearly as many offensive rebounds as UD's defensive with 17.
- The rebounding advantage helped the Pirates earn a 25-13 difference in 2nd Chance Points.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After allowing the first four points, the Crusaders turned in the first of what would be 13 lead changes on a 7-0 run. Back-to-back treys by Gonzalez and Colvin made it a 6-4 UD advantage. Kaiser would hit the second-of-two free throws to cap the early run three minutes out of the opening tip.
Dallas kept the early momentum by extending the lead to as many as six. The first was a layup by Rory MacCallum (Golden, Col.) with 13:54 in the first half. After SU's Mike May drained a triple, Sarrat would answer back with one of his own to make it 17-11 a couple possessions later.
Ahead 21-16, Southwestern etched nine straight points that started with a three by Luke Hicks. Martinez swiped a steal on the next play and tied the game for the first time since being scoreless and 10:20 left. About a minute later, Martinez scored the go-ahead basket at the time and then Whitlock added a jumper to seal the outburst. Southwestern's Justin McCormack and UD's Sarrat traded treys , but then the Gold and Black took off and built a lead by as many as seven near end of stanza. After May's two free throws opened a 37-30 edge and 2:25 remaining, the Crusaders posted the last six points of the half to make it 37-36 at intermission. Kaiser scored the first pair of field goals for UD and Giadolor ended the span with a basket with four seconds.
It was an early lead for the road team in the second half. Sarrat put his team up 13 seconds in on a layup that was assisted from Gonzalez. A few lead exchanges, and then Giadolor knocked down a triple to make it 45-43. His long range shot was countered by Chris Molina, but later it was a Gonzalez three with 12:23 that broke a 52-all tie and gave UD a bit of a lead for the next couple moments.
MacCallum extended the lead to five on the next points, and Garate kept it at five (59-54) with exactly 12 minutes remaining in regulation when he countered the Pirates field goal prior. Southwestern got the next five with May finding a layup and Hicks sinking a trey to make it 59-59. Kaiser lifted Dallas up by two on the next play, but then the sixth and final tie of the contest happened with 10 and a half to play.
UD's Colvin made a jumper to display the final edge the guests held all game at 65-64. Wheeler came up with a layup at 8:05 to switch the scoreboard a final time. Stan Kannegieter smacked one of the team's three blocks on the next Dallas possession and Ben Stiver rattled down a trifecta on the break to spark a 69-64 lead. The next seven minutes witnessed a 22-8 run by the Pirates from the go-ahead field goal to the game's leading scorer capping the span on a fastbreak layup with 49 seconds. Dallas did get eight of the next 10 points from then on with Sarrat gaining the single digit margin on a final trey.
