Southwestern uses Big 2nd Half Run to Sink Crusaders Friday
IRVING, Texas – A big second half run was too much for the University of Dallas men's basketball team (5-6, 0-2 SCAC) on Friday against Southwestern University (6-6, 1-0 SCAC) in an 85-73 setback. This included the guests outscoring UD 52-41 in the final stanza. It is also the Crusaders first loss at home this season, moving to 3-1.

- Prince Giadolor (Rockwall, Texas) notched a team-high 17 points. This is the 5th straight contest and 8th overall the sophomore has recorded double figures in this category.
- Darrius Colvin (Waco, Texas) followed closely at 16 points. That is his 9th game to break double-digits.
- The team's top scoring tandem copied each other at 8-of-16 shooting from the field. Colvin garnered five rebounds, while a quartet of players all collected four apiece.
- Michael Sarrat (Colleyville, Texas) completed the top trio of double figure scorers with 12 points. He had both of the Crusaders only pair of three-pointers this night.
- Lorenzo Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas) and Giadolor each dished four assists, which combined for all but two to the team's 10 total.
- Zach Whitlock and Ben Stiver tied the Pirates with 22 points each for game-highs. Whitlock missed a double-double by one rebound, but still registered a game-high of nine. Luke Hicks added 11 from the bench along with Stiver; who did not miss going 7-for-7 in field goals (6-6 3FG).

- Southwestern outshot the Crusaders 49.2 percent (32-65) to 45.3 percent (29-64). Both teams sank 13 free throws, with the home side earning an extra attempt at 20.
- The Pirates pulled down 41 rebounds compared to 30 for UD. Assists also was a double-digit differential in favor of SU, 20-10.
- Despite being outdone 18-12 in turnovers, the Crusaders totaled a 20-19 advantage in points from the miscues. The home squad also swiped 10 steals, which gives them double-digits in that column in the last trio of matchups, which all have been in the Maher Center.
- Dallas also enjoyed a 46-38 edge with points in the paint, and 15-2 edge in second chance points.
- Southwestern raced away on fastbreak points 17-2, and the bench combined for a 47-14 edge in points scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED
It took 45 seconds for the Crusaders to get on the board with Colvin completing an alley-hoop tip-in from Gonzalez. The point guard that dished the assist had a steal 15 seconds prior before the sequence. Southwestern's Whitlock tied the game with a jump shot at 18:21. A little over two minutes later, Hicks popped a trifecta for the Pirates' first lead of the game and then a jumper a minute later stretched the edge to 7-4. On the next possession, UD's Calvin scored his third field goal for all the points on the Navy and White's side of the scoreboard so far.
With 12:39 left until halftime, Emmanuel Calton (Keller, Texas) knotted the game with a layup and then he lifted Dallas in front on a jumper two possessions later. Stiver got the Gold and Black back on top with the first of two treys in a row. The Crusaders countered with six unanswered point to go up 17-15. Tom Kaiser (Nashville, Tenn.) put the go-ahead bucket at the time in then, but the remaining 8:35 was a bunch of traded points that helped reflect the 19 lead changes and 10 ties in the final box. Sarrat sent UD up 30-28 with 1:42 remaining on his first trifecta. Stiver responded with a triple of his own and the Pirates went up going into intermission. A missed Dallas jumper gave Connor Kim an opportunity for a jumper that pushed the margin to three. Gonzalez drained both free throws and the Crusaders were down 33-32 at half.
Giadolor got the home team up on a jumper a little over a minute in the next frame. He had 14 points in the second half. Southwestern responded with Molina scoring on back-to-back field goals that had a UD turnover in between. A few plays later, Sarrat dialed his other three of the contest to knot the scoreboard at 39 with about four minutes gone by. Each team had a few little bursts, but Dallas had its final one with a Giadolor jump shot and Kaiser layup putting the team up 46-43 with 13:07 left.
It became all Pirates next as Stiver downed a trey on the next shot to tie it a final time and spark 11 straight points. Whitlock swatted a block on the UD's next chance of scoring and had three during that streak. The Crusaders also had a turnover but then forced one back on a steal themselves on the next play but came up empty at the line when getting fouled. Southwestern eventually ballooned the lead to 17 on a 25-5 scoring swing.
Dallas kept trying to claw back in the last five minutes from that juncture, but it was too wide of a deficit to overcome. Colvin did slam down a furious dunk outside the left block over a Pirate to get UD within 10 (79-69). But Southwestern was unfazed securing a triumph in its conference opener.
