Crusaders drop Non-Conference Matchup to Arlington Baptist on Wednesday

IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision on Wednesday afternoon to Arlington Baptist College. The result closed a 2-5 home stand for the Crusaders, who have now lost their last five games.

The Patriots were able to take advantage of 11 walks in the game, which included four in the first inning to help give them a 2-0 advantage. The guests never trailed. Dallas was able to get on the board in the third inning, but stranded 13 runners overall. Four runs in the fifth and sixth pushed the gap wider, and a three-spot in the top of the ninth capped AB's run total.

Pitcher Records: W) Rivera (1-0), L) Goehring (0-1)

Nick Goehring (Phoenix, Ariz.) made his first career start on the bump, and retired the first two batters with ground outs. A walk, hit by pitch, and three consecutive walks put Arlington Baptist on top.

The Crusaders were able to load the bases in the home half of the first, but left the runners there. Two innings later, the top of UD's lineup reached base with a walk. While Josh Abalos (Lewisville, Texas) was hitting, Jordan Stickler (Grand Rapids, Mich.) was caught stealing before the second free pass. Nathan Patton (McKinney, Texas) doubled to the left field corner, but a strong relay throw from left to shortstop would get Abalos out trying to score. Jessup Scott (Lewiston, Idaho) made sure the Crusaders came up with at least a run on an RBI hit to left.

In the fifth, a couple errors helped the Patriots extend the lead to 5-1. Overall UD committed four errors, while the Patriots were charged with two.

Zachary Taylor (Humble, Texas) ripped a triple to right field for the home team's other extra base hit. Seth Hanson (Apache Junction, Ariz.) had walked prior with two outs and scored.

Dallas also drew a lot of walks with nine total. However, it was two lead off hits by Abalos and Patton in the seventh that set the stage for the final UD run to come home. Paul Scioli (Lubbock, Texas) hit a groundball to short, and the attempt at completing the double play was off line. Abalos came home on that play to cut the deficit in half, 6-3.

The Patriots sealed the final margin with their ninth inning display that was highlighted by three hits and their only doubles by Justan Bailey and Tyler Brown.

Dallas slightly outhit the opposition 8-7. Patton had the only multiple hit performance for UD with a 2-for-5. He also scored a run. Stickler and Hanson each drew a trio of walks.

Seven pitchers were on the hill for UD, and Jamie Wallace (Crocket, Texas) and Conrad Voss (Corona, Calif.) were the lone arms to not allow a walk. The duo combined for 2.1 innings and each allowed a hit to go with a strikeout.

Austin Hunt came up with the other multiple hit game with a 2-for-3 to lead the Patriots. James Duvall, Hunt, and Bailey formed a trio of players that scored two runs.

Ryan Rivera took the win with five innings thrown in the start. He surrendered two runs as he walked around five hits and six walks. Dalton Land and Lyric Walker followed with three innings and an inning out of the pen, respectively.

Both pitching staffs fanned five players.
