ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Dallas volleyball team split a 2-2 weekend at the Baden Invitational hosted by Washington University (MO) on Friday and Saturday. The Crusaders (11-14) went 1-1 each day by winning the early matchup each time. Dallas edged Lakeland University, 3-1, and Monmouth College (IL), 3-2. It dropped matches to Washington and University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) was named to the All-Tournament Team.

MATCH 1 VS. LAKELAND

The Crusaders used a 7-5 run that was capped by a Whyte kill to slice a deficit to 20-19 in the first set. Lakeland (11-9) scored the last five points starting with a kill by Abby Baumgartner and service ace by Davan Fleming to give the opposition a 1-0 lead.

UD surged out to a five-point lead where the margin stood up and Larissa Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas) rotated on serve during a five-point streak to open a 10-point advantage (23-13) that evened the sets.

The closest set was the third set, as the Crusaders led by no more than two and Lakeland only led by one. A trio of attack errors, with the last being a block assist by Anna Stevenson (Dallas, Texas) and Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas) gave the Crusaders the set-win.

A 7-0 run with six points coming from Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) serving headlined the Crusaders last set that resulted in a victory. Whyte had four kills including three straight during that outburst. Garcia and Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.) registered the other kills. Overall, UD concluded the game on a15-6 run that featured 13 of the team's 19 kills of the frame within that scoring span. Ramirez, Stevenson, and even Pua notched kills during the run.

Dallas hit .255 compared to .138 for the Muskies. Whyte paced the offense with 14 kills, four errors, and 30 total attacks for a .333 kill percentage. Garcia matched the hitting clip and followed with 13 kills but followed with one fewer errors and the same total attacks. Anable collected her sixth double-double of the season with 11 kills and a team-high 21 digs. Pua added 14 digs and three service aces. Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas) managed eight kills and two service aces, as UD totaled six as a unit. Ramirez put up 41 assists. The Crusaders held a 6-5 advantage in blocks with a 10-8 difference in block assists. Whyte and Stevenson each had three total blocks to lead the Navy and White.

Shannon Bishop scored game-highs in kills (15) and digs (24), while Abby Baumgartner contributed 11 kills. Erin Iwanski tossed in nine kills. A trio of players led by Bishop secured double figures in digs with Sydney Pingitore (20) and Allison Byrne (10) completing the unit. The Muskies held a 75-67 edge in digs.

MATCH 2 VS. WASHINGTON (MO)

Dallas competed hard against the host Washington University (14-6) squad in its home arena but came up short in four sets. Despite combining for 15 kills over the first two sets, UD dropped the first set by four and then returned the favor by winning the second set by same difference over a squad receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Weekly Rankings. The Crusaders utilized a 12-3 run to go up eight for their largest advantage of the set and held off a late WashU charge.

The third set was all the home team for the Bears taking over with a large gap on the board. Dallas nearly had a fifth set, as a 23-20 edge following an ace by Porras was nipped by four straight points to the Bears, pair of kills by Hannah Turner and Alaina Bohrer in a row. Garcia gave UD the tying point with a kill, but Bohrer put down the next two kills to give the Bears the last four points they earned and the triumph.

Stevenson was the only Dallas player in double figures for the offense with 10 kills and hit .500 on 18 total attempts and one hitting error. Whyte, Ramirez, and Anable all had five kills. Porras, Anable, and Pua had multiple service aces at two apiece.

Washington University edged the Crusaders in most categories on the night by significant margins except service aces (UD held 8-6 edge) and digs (evened at 72). The home squad polished 57 kills compared to 36 led by a trio of Bach, Turner, and Bohrer at 15, 12, and 10, respectively.

MATCH 3 VS. MONMOUTH (IL)

Five of the first six points went to the Crusaders en route to a double-digit lead that started at 15-5. Eventually UD would put away its largest margin win of a set in the contest at a 15-point edge. UD had 17 kills and one attack error to hit .444 in the opening frame.

In the second set, the Crusaders never trailed but were battled to a couple ties including 17-17 for the last one prior to eight of the final 11 points going to them. Anable was on serve and three straight points broke the 17-all tally and Dallas never trailed by less than three.

The Crusaders found themselves in tight scores during the next sets and could not find a clinching set-win. Set three resulted in a 5-2 advantage for the Fighting Scots (9-10) during the last seven serves following a 20-20 deadlock. Down 24-22 in the fourth set, Garcia kept UD alive with a kill but Megan Gilstrap won the last kill to force a final set.

Porras went onto serve and kills by Garcia with Stevenson hitting a kill between the sophomore's started a 3-0 lead. Monmouth cut the deficit to one immediately, but the Crusaders broke out to a four-point lead with three more kills highlighted by Anable on consecutive ones. She ended up with four in the set, including the last kill by Dallas that made it 12-9 and started a concluding 4-0 run. Two attack errors and an ace by Pua secured the win.

The Crusaders hit .224 and totaled 58 kills with all coming from five players. A quartet within this group had double-digits led by Porras with 17 kills and 12 digs for a double-double. Garcia matched a season-best 15 from a 3-2 win over Austin College (Sept. 17). Anable and Whyte chipped in 10 kills each. Ramirez matched her assists count from UD's other victory. Whyte was part of seven block assists and Ramirez added three. Dallas tied a season-best 14 block assists for the third time this season. The team logged 13 aces to tie its second highest amount in 2019. Last year's team-leader Pua had four with Porras and Garcia hitting three apiece.

Dallas, who only had one more kill than the Fighting Scots (57), were led by Riley Cook and Ashley Farris with 14 each. Lauren Sperry gave 13 to go with a team-high three block assists. Laura Dulee assisted 46 kills and grabbed the second-highest digs on the team with 21.

Dallas was swept in three straight sets, dropping the first and third ones by a combined 17 points. The middle set had the Crusaders down by four (14-10) through the early duration. Four consecutive points with Pua on serve for three of them sparked a 6-1 run to swing the team from Irving up three (19-16). A pair of four-point streaks allowed the Blue Devils (17-6) to respond on nine of the final 13 points. At one juncture, Dallas trailed 24-21 but it gained points from an attack error and Stevenson kill to slice the margin to 24-23. A kill by UW-Stout's Jessica Barr finished the 2-0 set lead.

UD actually held an 11-10 advantage for kills in the first set and that frame resulted in being the most kills by the Crusaders in a set that match.

Porras, Whyte, and Garcia combined for 18 of the team's 26 kills with team-highs being six apiece. Ramirez posted 17 assists and Anable was the only Crusader in double-digits for digs with 10. Whyte managed four more blocks giving her 15 over the quartet of non-conference games. UD had five blocks compared to three.

Wis.-Stout was led by Kara Simonson with nine kills. She had one attacking error and just 12 total attempts for a .667 kill percentage. Lexie Nelson and Amber Ripley contributed seven kills each. Jessica Duval and Nelson nearly had identical assists with 14 and 12, respectively.

Dallas third-year head coach Kelli Trautmann did face off against her younger sister Mandy Trautmann, who is in her second year leading the Blue Devils.
