KERRVILLE, Texas – The University of Dallas volleyball team went 1-1 on Sunday and finished 2-2 overall in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Crossover hosted at Schreiner University. Dallas (9-12, 4-5 SCAC) was swept by No. 8 Trinity University (16-4, 8-1 SCAC) to start the day before pulling off three set wins over University of St. Thomas (5-12, 3-7 SCAC).

There was not much the Crusaders could do early on to halt the top-10 nationally ranked Trinity team down, as it went up 13-2 in the opening set to easily take the early momentum. In the next set, UD rallied from down 18-12 with six of the next eight points to cut the deficit to two. That was the closest margin, as the Tigers roared away with the next four that included a kill from Emily Ellis and consecutive service aces from Annie Rose Leggett.

A kill by Anna Stevenson (Dallas, Texas) started a four-point stretch in the last set. Dallas surpassed double figures for kills (11) in the set and scored its highest points-total of the match. Dallas led by as many as four and was in front the entire way until 21-19. Trinity's Sara Flynn got TU back on serve and started a 6-0 run that sent the Maroon to a straight set sweep.

Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas) led Dallas with nine kills and committed just three attack errors in 17 total attacks for a .353 kill percentage. Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) contributed six kills. Larissa Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas) posted 25-of-26 assists.

Trinity hit .264 as a team and was led by Ellis and Leggett for kills with 15 and 12, respectively. Avery Tuggle added seven kills. Marisa Amarino and Lexie Acevedo shared the setter duties with a combined 38 assists. Leggett tallied five service aces with Nadia kern hitting three. Trinity finished with 11 aces.

Both sides had eight block assists.

MATCH 2 VS. ST. THOMAS

Dallas used a set-high 16 kills in the first set and had just enough to inch by the Celts in the opening frame by two. After leading 5-3, St. Thomas pushed ahead with the next four points and led up until it was 16-15. With a two-point lead, Whyte registered a kill to spark four straight UD points and an eventual 7-3 scoring swing. Another four-point stretch gave St. Thomas the lead at 23-21. Needing point to stay alive, Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas) earned the game-tying kill and went to serve the next two balls. Garcia put Dallas up with a kill and an attack error by UST sealed the nail-biter.

The second set was a more relaxing one as the Crusaders shook off a 1-0 deficit and strung together points to a 13-9 lead. The Celts evened the score at 13-all, but Dallas responded with seven consecutive points. After getting the go-ahead point, Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) went on serve and started with an ace. Whyte followed with a trio of kills and added a fourth one to cap the surge. The largest lead of the set was the final nine-point margin.

An 8-3 run for the Crusaders put them in front 19-14 with a kill from Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.) finishing the stretch. Overall, UD totaled a 13-8 scoring stretch to make it 24-18. The Celts got the next four points, but an attack error stuffed the rally and gave UD its second straight set sweep in conference play and ended the weekend slate just how it started.

Whyte was the leader in kills with 13 and committed four errors on 30 attacks for a .300 kill percentage. Porras followed with 12 kills and added seven digs. Garcia and Anable chipped in nine and six kills, respectively. Ramirez had 33 assists. Garcia and Pua each served three aces, as UD finished with eight. A trio of players: Pua (19), Anable (14), and Bonnie Baldwin (North Salem, N.Y.) (11) recorded double figures for digs as UD narrowly edged the Celts by one (73-72).

Alaina Lanik led the Celts with 10 kills and 18 digs for a double-double. Kaje Massenburg was next with nine kills and Courtney Bates added six. Kelsie Walker had 19 assists, while Lanik, Mariah Regan, Chelsea Guerrero, and Walker formed a quartet in double-digits for digs.

Dallas takes a break from conference play next weekend (Oct. 11-12) at the Baden Invitational hosted by Washington University (MO). The Crusaders open on Friday with Lakeland University and Washington. They conclude the next day with Monmouth (IL) and University of Wisconsin-Stout.
