Crusaders Start Home Invite with Pair of Sweeps

IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas volleyball team swept day one of the University of Dallas Invite on Friday. The Crusaders (5-5) climbed back to .500 and have now won three-straight games after taking care of Alfred University and McMurry University in straight-set sweeps. Abigail Porras (El Paso, Texas) combined for 20 kills to help lead Dallas to a 2-0 day after securing both matches with a service ace on match point.

Dallas hit a season-best .351 against the Saxons. UD started its home tournament out strong in front of its own fans. The Crusaders started set one with a large lead and never looked back. A trio of Dallas hitters had double-digits in kills, as the team gathered 53 on the afternoon. That mark was three behind the season-best that occurred in the ETBU match which went five sets.

Dayjah Whyte (Round Rock, Texas) led the trio with 14, while Ellise Anable (Phoenix, Ariz.) and Isabel Garcia (San Antonio, Texas) notched 10 apiece. Larissa Ramirez (San Antonio, Texas) dished out 31 assists to lead the team in assists. Stephanie Janysek (Sinton, Texas) added 12 in that same category. Krystyn Pua (Escondido, Calif.) led the defense with 12 of the team's 50 digs. Chloe Ilagan (Sugar Land, Texas) made her home debut by sealing match-point with a service ace.

Amber Smith paced the Saxons offense with 14 kills. Alfred (5-6) finished the game with a .179 kill percentage.

This win marked the third-straight home opening win for UD.

UD took the first 11 points in the contest with Porras at the service line during the rally. UD took care of business for the rest of the set against the undefeated Warhawks. McMurry (7-1) held the lead for a good chunk of the second set, but UD went on a 6-0 run to retake the lead (12-8). The Warhawks rallied near the end, but UD kept its momentum churning to take the 2-0 set lead. The Warhawks opened up a 17-9 advantage in the third, but UD came storming back and eventually tied it up a 20. The Crusaders took five of the final six points to seal the sweep.

Porras led the offensive attack against the Warhawks with 11 kills, while Garcia added seven. Ramirez and Janysek both shared the role of the setter position by grabbing 23 and 12 assists, respectively. Porras (11), Anable (11) and Pua (10) each helped support the back line in the digs category.

McMurry was limited to a 0.29 hitting percentage in the contest.
